Product Description

Oliver’s cabled hat is the icing on the “proverbial” cake. Or should I say sweater! What kind of aunt would I be if I designed a handsome sweater for my great-nephew and not finish it with a matching hat? Not a very good one I’d say! So, being the “Bestest” aunt ever I went ahead and designed Oliver’s cabled hat to match his cabled sweater.

♦ There are a couple of rounds in the pattern when you will need to move stitches from one needle to another in order to have enough stitches to work the pattern. No worries there…the rounds are well written and you will have no troubles.

Oliver's Cabled Hat by Joan Laws

What is Being Made

Oliver's Cabled Hat is a classic knitted beanie featuring decorative cable stitch patterns throughout. This downloadable knitting pattern offers three size options to suit different head circumferences: Baby (18"/45cm), Child (20"/51cm), and Adult (22"/56cm). The hat is designed as a year-round accessory that combines functional warmth with visually interesting texture work, making it suitable for gift-giving or personal collection building.

Knitting Techniques Used

This intermediate-level knitting project employs several fundamental and intermediate techniques. The hat is constructed using circular knitting worked in continuous rounds, which eliminates the need for seaming and creates a seamless, professional finish. The pattern incorporates cable knitting, a technique that involves crossing groups of stitches over one another using a cable needle to create twisted, rope-like textural patterns. The designer has also included optional ribbing sections at the brim, allowing knitters to customize the finished look based on personal preference.

Stitches Used

The stitch work in Oliver's Cabled Hat centers on two primary stitches: knit stitches and purl stitches. The brim features knit one, purl one ribbing (k1, p1 rib), a classic elastic stitch pattern that provides stretch and recovery at the hat's edge. The main body of the hat is worked in cable pattern, which requires manipulating stitches with a cable needle to create the signature twisted, dimensional appearance. The cable pattern is worked in rounds, meaning the knitter works continuously in a spiral rather than turning the work back and forth.

Materials and Gauge

The pattern calls for Universal Yarn Uptown Worsted, a 100% acrylic yarn available in multiple colorways. The specified yardage is 180 yards (165 meters) per 3.5 ounces (100 grams), with the main color being #353/Donahue requiring one full skein, and a contrasting color #302/White Glow needed in a small amount for the ribbed brim detail.

Needle requirements include one US6 (4mm) 16-inch (40cm) circular needle for the ribbed brim section and two US7 (4.5mm) 16-inch (40cm) circular needles for the main cable pattern body, or size as needed to achieve proper gauge. Eight stitch markers are required to track pattern repeats and construction sections, and a cable needle is essential for executing the cable stitches.

The pattern specifies a gauge of 20 stitches and 22 rounds equaling 4 inches (10cm) in cable pattern worked in rounds on the larger size needles. Achieving this gauge is critical for creating a hat that fits properly across all three size options.
