Product Description

The heart is unique in its capacity to grow. It makes room for more love by expanding immeasurably, and does not necessarily require us to sacrifice an existing love for the sake of a new one. This is a wonderful phenomenon when it comes to family and friends, but can cause problems where lovers or vices are concerned! Here’s a shawl that illustrates this principle both in color and form: an old favorite colorway can be paired with your latest infatuation, while the easy, popular construction embraces a new and different shape. Don’t worry – there’s room in your heart for Old Love, New Flames!

Created in collaboration with Malabrigo Yarn for their Freelance Patterns Project.

Sizeone size: approx. 170 cm / 67” wide along at I-cord edge and 50 cm / 19.75” high.

Old Loves, New Flames Knit Shawl by Justyna Lorkowska

What is Being Made

Old Loves, New Flames is a beginner-friendly knit shawl designed by Justyna Lorkowska and created in collaboration with Malabrigo Yarn for their Freelance Patterns Project. This downloadable PDF pattern produces a finished shawl measuring approximately 170 cm (67 inches) wide along the I-cord edge and 50 cm (19.75 inches) in height. The shawl features a two-color colorwork design, with the sample shown in Malabrigo Sock colorways 37 Lettuce and 808 Violeta Africana.

Construction and Structure

The shawl is constructed in three distinct sections, beginning at the narrowest end with just six stitches. The first section features stripes and incorporates increases on all right-side rows to gradually expand the fabric. This modular construction approach allows for a logical progression from the smallest starting point to the full finished dimensions.

Stitches and Techniques Used

Primary Stitch: Garter stitch worked flat (knitting every row) forms the foundation of this design. Garter stitch creates a reversible, textured fabric with horizontal ridges that work beautifully for shawl construction.

Shaping Techniques: Strategic increases on right-side rows create the gradual expansion characteristic of shawl shaping. The pattern also incorporates an I-cord edge, a refined finishing technique that creates a smooth, decorative border along the finished edge.

Materials and Tools Required

  • Yarn: 2 colors of Malabrigo Sock (100% merino wool), 1 skein of each color. Each skein contains 400 meters / 440 yards per 100 grams. The 3-ply weight provides excellent stitch definition while remaining lightweight and drapable for shawl wear.
  • Needles: 3.5 mm / US #4 circular needle, 60 cm (24 inches) in length
  • Additional Tools: Tapestry needle for weaving in ends and a set of blocking pins for finishing

Gauge and Sizing Notes

The pattern specifies a gauge of 22 stitches and 48 rows over 10 cm (4 inches) when working garter stitch flat. While gauge flexibility is noted as not crucial for this particular project, variations in tension will affect both the finished dimensions and the total yardage required to complete the shawl. Knitters working at a tighter gauge may need slightly less yarn, while those with a looser gauge may require additional yardage.

Skill Level

Rated as a beginner-level pattern, Old Loves, New Flames is accessible to knitters new to shawl construction. The straightforward garter stitch base and clear sectional construction make this an excellent introduction to shawl knitting techniques, while the two-color design adds visual interest without requiring complex colorwork skills.
