Product Description
This is a pattern for a tiny turtle! It's only 1" long! It's a member of Oh, so tiny! Collection.
Oh, so tiny! Collection has been created especially for those who (like me) love tiny things. It consists of eight cute animals: elephant, giraffe, rabbit, owl, sheep, reindeer, bear and turtle. Each amigurumi is not larger than 1.5" (2,5cm) high, sitting.
Why so tiny? Because small is beautiful. And tiny is cute. Plus, being that tiny they can double as a key ring, stitch marker or even an earring.
Can you go even smaller? Well, of course you can! I designed them to be tiny enough to be smaller than usual amis and big enough to be relatively easy to make. You can also try making the animals from these patterns with the thinnest thread and tiniest hook you can find and they’ll be even smaller.
Oh, so Tiny! Turtle Crochet Pattern
What Is Being Made
The Oh, so Tiny! Turtle is a miniature amigurumi toy designed by Justyna Kacprzak. This tiny turtle measures just 1 inch in length, making it an ideal project for creating small decorative pieces, dollhouse accessories, or charm-sized toys. The pattern is part of the Oh, so Tiny! Collection and offers crafters the opportunity to create a detailed, finished toy despite its diminutive size.
Crochet Techniques and Construction
This beginner-friendly crochet pattern uses continuous rounds as its primary construction method. Rather than working in traditional joined rounds, the turtle is crocheted in a spiral, which creates a seamless appearance and simplifies the process for newer crocheters. The pattern demonstrates efficient use of materials and construction techniques suitable for amigurumi—the Japanese art of crocheting small stuffed toys.
A distinctive feature of this pattern is its innovative approach to stuffing. Due to the turtle's extremely small size, traditional fiberfill stuffing is unnecessary. Instead, the designer recommends using the long thread tails left over from sewing body parts together, making this an economical and waste-conscious project.
Stitches Used
The Oh, so Tiny! Turtle pattern employs fundamental crochet stitches accessible to beginners:
- Chain (ch) – Used to create foundation stitches and foundation chains
- Single Crochet (sc) – The primary stitch used throughout the body construction
- Increase (inc) – Created by working 2 single crochets into 1 stitch to expand the fabric
- Decrease (dec) – Achieved by single crocheting 2 stitches together to reduce fabric width
These basic stitches are combined with repeat instructions (noted as x5/x3 in the pattern) to build the turtle's body, shell, and limbs.
Materials and Tools
Yarn: The pattern calls for 100% acrylic yarn or cotton thread in light fingering or 3-ply and 4-ply weights. Small amounts of beige, green, and purple are needed to create the turtle's body, shell, and details.
Crochet Hook: A 1.5mm crochet hook is recommended for this pattern. Alternatively, a 1.75mm hook may be used if the crafter finds 1.5mm too small; using the larger hook will result in a slightly bigger finished turtle.
Embellishments and Notions: The pattern includes 2 small black beads for eyes. For crafters without access to seed beads, the pattern offers an embroidery alternative using French knots, providing flexibility in finishing the turtle's facial features.
Difficulty Level
This pattern is classified as beginner-friendly, making it suitable for crocheters new to amigurumi or those seeking a quick, manageable project. The use of basic stitches, continuous rounds, and straightforward construction techniques ensures accessibility for crafters building their skills.
