Product Description
Oh Johnny Lee is a slim, shaped, long-sleeve, hip-length pullover with a v-neckline, worked in 2 colors. Its overall texture is garter and rib check (a 10 st by 12 row repeat) trimmed with 1x1 rib at the bodice and sleeve hems, and neckline. 2 ample pockets are lined with the color of the upper bodice, for balance and fun. The sides of the v-neckline extend up and around to the back, where they are joined and attached to the back neckline – creating a cozy, raised back collar. This piece is worked in the round, from the bottom up, until the start of the v-neckline where it splits and is worked back and forth. Stitches are picked up around the neckline for rib trimming. Set-in sleeves are worked in the round from the bottom up. TECHNIQUES REQUIRED: knit, purl, long-tail CO, ssk, k2tog, p2tog, p2tog tbl, k1-f/b, stitch pick up around neckline, short row shaping and 3 needle BO (at shoulders), and (minimal) seaming. No blocking necessary.
Oh Johnny Lee Pullover Sweater by Deb Hoss
Garment Overview
Oh Johnny Lee is a slim, shaped, long-sleeve hip-length pullover designed by Deb Hoss. This intermediate-level knitting project features a flattering v-neckline and is worked primarily in two colors. The sweater is available in sizes XS through 3X, offering a versatile fit for various body types. The design combines textural interest with practical details, making it both visually appealing and functional for everyday wear.
Design Features and Construction
The sweater showcases a distinctive garter and rib check texture throughout the body, created using a 10-stitch by 12-row repeat pattern that adds visual depth and dimension. The v-neckline is a signature design element that extends up and around to the back of the sweater, where the sides are joined and attached to the back neckline to create a cozy, raised back collar. This thoughtful neckline construction adds both comfort and style to the finished piece.
Two ample pockets are integrated into the design and lined with the color of the upper bodice, providing both practical storage and visual balance. The bodice, sleeve hems, and neckline are finished with 1x1 rib trim, creating clean, professional edges that frame the garter and rib check texture beautifully.
Construction Methods and Techniques
Oh Johnny Lee employs a strategic construction approach that combines circular knitting with flat knitting techniques. The sweater is worked in the round from the bottom up until the v-neckline begins, at which point the work is split and completed working back and forth in rows. This method allows for seamless construction in the body while providing the control needed for the shaped v-neckline.
Set-in sleeves are worked in the round from the bottom up, ensuring a professional fit at the armhole. Stitches are picked up around the neckline after the body and sleeves are complete, allowing for the rib trim finishing that frames the v-neckline and raised back collar.
Required Stitches and Techniques
- Basic Stitches: Knit and purl stitches form the foundation of the garter and rib check pattern
- Cast-On Method: Long-tail cast-on for creating the initial foundation stitches
- Decreases: Slip, slip, knit (ssk), knit two together (k2tog), purl two together (p2tog), and purl two together through the back loop (p2tog tbl) for shaping
- Increases: Knit one front and back (k1-f/b) for adding stitches where needed
- Stitch Pick-Up: Picking up stitches around the neckline for rib trim application
- Short Row Shaping: Advanced shaping technique used to create the contoured fit and raised back collar
- Three-Needle Bind-Off: Professional joining method used to attach the neckline components
Yarn and Materials
Oh Johnny Lee is designed to be worked in aran-weight yarn, which provides excellent stitch definition for both the garter and rib check texture and the 1x1 rib trim. Aran weight offers a balanced gauge that allows the sweater to work up at a reasonable pace while maintaining the structured, shaped silhouette. The two-color construction adds visual interest and allows for creative color pairing while working with a single yarn weight throughout the project.
Appropriate knitting needles in the correct size for aran-weight yarn are required, along with a stitch marker for tracking pattern repeats and construction sections. The pattern accommodates various sizing needs, making it accessible to knitters of different body types and experience levels within the intermediate skill range.
