Product Description

The Oh Bee-Hive Honey Bee Tea Cosy knitting pattern is a really summery feeling tea cosy that is fun to make and looks amazing. The hive tea cosy design was based on the inside of a hive and the honeycomb pattern with all that wonderful honey. Fittingly I used Honeycomb stitch to create the main part of the cosy.

The beautiful knitted honey bees on the cosy are busily working away filling the honeycomb with pollen that they have freshly collected from the white flowers that decorate the spout and handle openings.

I love this tea cosy because it feels so fresh and I do love honeybees.

The Oh Bee-Hive Honey Bee Tea Cosy fits a medium sized teapot that covers a Teapot that holds 6 to 8 cups or 2 pints.

The pattern will be available for digital download as soon as you have completed purchase, so you could start knitting it very soon!

This product is the knitting pattern only to make your own Oh Bee-Hive Honey Bee Tea Cosy.

Oh Bee-Hive Honey Bee Tea Cosy

What is Being Made

The Oh Bee-Hive Honey Bee Tea Cosy is a knitted tea cosy designed to fit a 2-pint teapot or teapots that hold 6 to 8 cups. This intermediate-level knitting project creates a decorative and functional piece that insulates tea while adding a charming bee-themed aesthetic to the kitchen.

Craft and Techniques

This pattern is designed for knitting and is classified as an intermediate difficulty project. The tea cosy is constructed using a combination of knitting techniques that create visual interest through color work and stitch manipulation. The pattern employs double thickness yarn for select color sections, which means dividing balls of yarn into two separate balls and knitting them together as a single strand to achieve greater depth and richness in the finished piece.

Stitches Used

The pattern incorporates fundamental knitting stitches including:

  • Knit stitch (K) - the primary stitch forming the base fabric
  • Purl stitch (P) - used in reverse stockinette sections
  • Slip stitch (SL) - employed in a slip stitch pattern that creates textural variation, with instructions such as "SL2, K4" repeated across rows

The front and back panels are constructed identically and then joined together to form the complete cosy.

Materials and Yarn

This project uses DK weight yarn in multiple colors from the Hayfield Bonus DK range. The specific yarn quantities required are:

  • 28g in Pumpkin (primary color)
  • 18g in Sunflower (secondary color)
  • 17g in Bright Lemon (tertiary color)
  • 15g in White (accent color)
  • 4g in Black (detail color)
  • 4g in Light Grey Mix (detail color)

The pattern also requires stuffing material to add dimension and structure to the finished piece.

Needles and Tools

Two sizes of knitting needles are required to accommodate different sections of the pattern:

  • 5.5mm needles (UK size 5 or US size 9) - used for the main cosy sections where the initial cast-on of 28 stitches is worked
  • 4.0mm needles (UK size 8 or US size 6) - used for sections requiring a tighter gauge

Additional tools needed include a stitch holder for managing stitches during construction.

Pattern Structure

The tea cosy is constructed with front and back panels that are made identically. The pattern begins with a cast-on of 28 stitches using the larger needles and double thickness Pumpkin yarn. Initial rows are worked in stockinette stitch before transitioning to the slip stitch pattern detail. The slip stitch motif creates a repeating textural pattern across the fabric, with stitches slipped and knitted in alternating sequences to build visual interest that complements the bee-themed design.
