Product Description
Originally designed for the Progressive East End Project (PEEP) 2020
Oceanfront is a rectangular scarf in two widths (approx 8.5” and 11.5” wide). The scarf uses basic crochet stitches (single crochet, half double crochet, and double crochet). If you can count, you can crochet this scarf! You’ll need a size G (4.0mm) hook and light fingering weight yarn:
Main color - 400 yards
Contrast colors - you’ll need 6 contrast colors at least 88 yards each
Gauge - 19 hdc per 4”, unblocked. If you are using mini-skeins (88 yards) for your contrast colors, gauge is important - you don’t want to run out!
Note - this pattern is written with American crochet terminology

Project Overview
The Oceanfront scarf is a crochet design created by Laura Rasmussen that captures the peaceful essence of seaside waves. This downloadable PDF pattern offers crocheters an opportunity to create a wearable piece inspired by coastal serenity. The scarf is worked lengthwise, allowing for flexible sizing and color customization throughout the construction process.
What Is Being Made
A rectangular scarf available in two size options: a Narrow version measuring approximately 58 inches long by 8½ inches wide, and a Wide version measuring approximately 58 inches long by 11 inches wide. Both versions feature the same length but differ in width based on the number of color repeats incorporated into the design.
Crochet Techniques Used
This beginner-friendly pattern employs fundamental crochet techniques suitable for those new to the craft. The scarf is constructed using basic stitch work combined with a color-blocking approach. The lengthwise construction method allows crafters to work from one end to the other, building the scarf's length while incorporating color changes at regular intervals. The pattern encourages creative decision-making, allowing crocheters to either plan their color progression in advance or select colors spontaneously as they work.
Stitches Used
- Single crochet (sc) – The foundation stitch used to establish the base of the scarf
- Half double crochet (hdc) – A mid-height stitch used throughout the body of the design, with a gauge of 19 hdc stitches by 16 rows per 4 inches when blocked
- Double crochet (dc) – An additional stitch incorporated into the pattern structure
Materials and Tools
The Oceanfront scarf requires fingering weight yarn in a main color (MC) totaling approximately 400 yards, plus six contrast colors (CC1 through CC6), each requiring approximately 88 yards. This yardage breakdown makes the pattern ideal for using mini-skeins or yarn scraps in coordinating colors. A US G/4.0 mm crochet hook is used throughout the project, and a tapestry needle is needed for weaving in ends upon completion. The pattern is formatted as a downloadable PDF for easy reference while crocheting.
Difficulty Level
Rated as a beginner project, the Oceanfront scarf is accessible to crocheters who are comfortable with basic stitches and color changes. The straightforward stitch selection and lengthwise construction method make this an excellent choice for those building foundational crochet skills.
Design Considerations
Gauge is particularly important for the wide scarf version to ensure sufficient yarn when working with the 88-yard mini-skeins. Blocking the finished scarf to the specified gauge of 19 hdc by 16 rows per 4 inches will help achieve the intended finished dimensions and drape.
