Product Description
The scarf is worked diagonally over 4 rows, with an edge row worked once the body of the scarf is complete. It is designed to use just one ball of BWM Bloom, and the finished item measures 203cm (80") long and 15cm (6") wide once blocked.
Because of the simplicity of the design, it works well with short-length self-striping yarn. However, there is nothing stopping you from trying a plain yarn in a different fibre, or a wider design with a long-length self-striping yarn. Whatever you use, it is almost certain that the scarf will need to be blocked when complete. With the yarn I used (100% wool), it rolled badly so I steam blocked it to get it beautifully flat and drapey.
Pattern is written in both US and UK terminology and both have charts included.
Obliquity Scarf by Artefacts
What Is Being Made
The Obliquity Scarf is a crocheted accessory measuring 203 centimeters (80 inches) in length. This intermediate-level design creates a sophisticated scarf featuring geometric triangle motifs arranged in a repeating pattern, resulting in a textured, dimensional fabric with an elegant drape suitable for everyday wear or special occasions.
Crochet Techniques Used
This pattern employs several fundamental and intermediate crochet techniques to build its distinctive geometric structure. The scarf begins with a foundation chain or foundation double crochet base, then progresses through multiple rows that combine basic stitches with strategic spacing and shaping methods. The design uses skip stitches to create deliberate gaps that form the foundation for the three-dimensional triangle elements. Chain spaces are incorporated throughout to add openness and visual interest to the fabric. The pattern demonstrates how combining simple stitch techniques in specific sequences can produce complex, visually striking results.
Stitches Used
- Chain (ch) – the foundational stitch used to create the base and spacing throughout the pattern
- Single crochet (sc) – a short, tight stitch used for structure and shaping
- Half double crochet (hdc) – a medium-height stitch used within the triangle formations
- Double crochet (dc) – a taller stitch used to build height and dimension in the triangular motifs
- Treble (tr) – the tallest stitch in the pattern, used for edge definition
- Slip stitch (sl st) – used for joining and transitioning between sections
- Foundation double crochet (fdc) – an alternative cast-on method that eliminates the need for a separate foundation chain
Materials
This pattern requires minimal materials, making it an efficient project. One ball of Bendigo Woollen Mills Bloom yarn in DK weight provides sufficient yardage for the complete 203-centimeter scarf. A 5mm crochet hook (size 8/H) is used to work the yarn. The designer notes that tension is not crucial for this project – crafters can adjust hook size based on personal preference and desired fabric appearance. A tapestry needle completes the tool requirements for finishing and weaving in ends.
