Noni Lace Cowl or Scarf by Jennifer Lee
What is Being Made
The Noni is a versatile lace accessory designed by Jennifer Lee that can be worked as either a cowl or a scarf. The pattern provides instructions for both versions using the same lace stitch pattern. The Cowl version measures approximately 60cm (23½ inches) in width and 90cm (35½ inches) in length, creating a generous neck wrap. The Scarf version uses identical lace patterning but is configured at half the width (30cm or 12 inches) and double the length (180cm or 71 inches) for extended drape and versatility in styling.
Techniques and Construction
This knitting project employs lace knitting techniques to create an open, lightweight fabric with decorative eyelet patterns. The design is intentionally worked on larger needles than typical for the yarn weight, which produces a more open lacework structure and airy drape. The pattern uses a looser tension than standard recommendations to enhance the lace definition and create the desired lightweight aesthetic. Construction includes basic seaming with a wool needle to finish the piece.
Stitches Used
The pattern utilizes fundamental knitting stitches including knit stitches and slipped stitches (pass slipped stitch over) to create the lace pattern repeats. These techniques work together to form the characteristic openwork design that defines the Noni's delicate appearance.
Yarn and Needles
The Noni is worked in sport weight yarn. The pattern specifies Lincraft Cakes Illusion, which comes in 150g balls with approximately 600 meters of yardage. A single ball is sufficient to complete either the Cowl or Scarf version. Knitting is worked on 4.50mm needles (UK size 7, US size 7). A wool needle is required for sewing seams. The pattern notes that yarn quantities may vary depending on individual knitter tension and yarn characteristics.
Difficulty Level
This project is rated as Easy to Intermediate difficulty, making it accessible to knitters with some experience in basic techniques who are ready to explore lace knitting. The straightforward lace pattern and simple construction support skill development without overwhelming complexity.
Tension
The recommended tension is 18.5 stitches and 26 rows to 10cm (4 inches) measured over the lace pattern using 4.50mm needles. This looser-than-standard tension is intentional and essential for achieving the desired open, lightweight lacework characteristic of the design.
