♥ No Ordinary Mitts by Bunnymuff - Mona Zillah
What is Being Made
No Ordinary Mitts is a knitted mittens pattern inspired by Elmer the Elephant, designed by independent designer Bunnymuff (Mona Zillah). This project creates charming, colorful mittens suitable for intermediate knitters. The pattern is available as a downloadable PDF and includes multiple size options ranging from extra small through extra large.
Craft and Primary Technique
This pattern is primarily a knitting project, though it incorporates elements accessible to those familiar with both knitting and crochet techniques. The mittens are constructed using traditional hand-knitting methods with a focus on colorwork and shaping techniques essential to mittens construction.
Stitches and Techniques Used
- Cast-on methods: The pattern employs both backwards loop cast-on and long-tail cast-on (or elastic cast-on as an alternative), providing flexibility based on knitter preference
- Knit stitch (k): The fundamental stitch forming the fabric base
- Knit two together (k2tog): A decrease stitch used for shaping the mittens
- Lifted increases (m1L-lift and m1R-lift): Left and right leaning lifted increase stitches used for strategic shaping and construction details
- Colorwork: The pattern incorporates six contrast colors (CC1 through CC6) worked into the design alongside a main color (MC), creating the distinctive Elmer-inspired appearance
Materials: Yarn and Needles
The pattern calls for 2 Ply Jumper Weight yarn in fingering weight, specifically Jamieson & Smith 100% Shetland wool at 125 yards (115 meters) per 25 grams. Yarn requirements vary by size:
- Main color (MC): 12, 14, 16, 18, or 20 grams (approximately 60, 70, 80, 90, or 100 yards/55, 64, 74, 83, or 92 meters) depending on size
- Each contrast color (CC1-CC6): 2, 3, 4, 5, or 6 grams (approximately 10, 15, 20, 25, or 30 yards/10, 15, 20, 25, or 30 meters) for each of the six colors
The pattern specifies particular Jamieson & Smith color codes: MC (9113), CC1 (72), CC2 (9097), CC3 (1284), CC4 (1232), CC5 (FC38), and CC6 (141). Specific needle requirements are referenced in the pattern documentation.
Difficulty Level
This pattern is rated as intermediate difficulty, making it suitable for knitters with foundational skills who are ready to tackle colorwork, multiple decrease and increase techniques, and fitted garment construction.
