Product Description

The leg of this sock features an allover pattern that tapers down into a point over the top of the foot. The pattern is inspired by one of Tolkien's Valar, Nienna, who took on the grief of all Arda after the fall of Melkor. The pattern looks similar to smocking, but is actually very elastic.

Skill Level: Intermediate knitter/Beginning sock knitter. The stitch pattern is really very simple, so only basic top-down sock construction makes this pattern complex. I think it'd work well for someone wanting to move beyond the plain vanilla sock and into something more adventurous.

Sizing is adjustable in most areas. Small (Medium, Large) socks measure 8(8.5, 9) inches or 20(21.5, 23) cm in circumference. Leg length, ankle, and foot are all adjustable to fit and preference.

There are only two unusual stitches, both have written explanations as well as video demonstration.

I strongly recommend using a self-striping or gradient yarn as the pattern will create an interesting pulling

Nienna Socks by Claire Ellen

Project Overview

Nienna is a downloadable knitting pattern for socks designed by independent designer Claire Ellen. This advanced-level sock project features an elegant all-over wrap pattern inspired by the character Nienna from J.R.R. Tolkien's The Silmarillion. The pattern creates a sock with interesting surface texture while maintaining the elasticity necessary for comfortable wear.

What is Being Made

The Nienna pattern produces a pair of socks featuring an all-over wrap stitch design. The wrap pattern creates visual interest across the entire sock surface while preserving the stretch and fit required for functional hosiery. This design works beautifully in self-striping yarn, though gradient or solid-colored yarns are also suitable options.

Techniques and Stitches Used

The primary technique featured in this pattern is the wrap stitch, applied throughout the sock in an all-over repeat. The wrap pattern maintains elasticity despite its textured appearance, making it both decorative and functional. While the pattern is classified as advanced difficulty, the skills required remain relatively accessible to beginning sock-knitters who have mastered basic sock construction fundamentals.

Skill Level and Knitter Experience

This pattern is designed for intermediate knitters or those beginning their sock-knitting journey. Although classified as advanced, the techniques do not extend significantly beyond the basic skills necessary for creating a standard sock. The straightforward construction makes this an excellent project for knitters looking to expand their sock-knitting repertoire while still achieving professional-quality results. More experienced knitters will also find the elegant finished product rewarding.

Materials and Supplies

  • Yarn: Approximately 320–380 yards of sock yarn
  • Needles: US 1 (2.25mm)
  • Additional supplies: Scissors and tapestry needle for finishing

Yarn Recommendations

Self-striping sock yarn is the ideal choice for this pattern, as the automatic color changes complement the wrap stitch pattern beautifully. However, gradient yarns or solid-colored sock yarns will also produce attractive results, allowing knitters flexibility in yarn selection based on personal preference and stash availability.
