Product Description
I like to think that the Loch Ness Monster doesn't live all alone and perhaps has a happy little family down in the depths of the Loch. Nessie Jr. is a little insecure about swimming, and needs a life preserver to help keep afloat. It's hard to hide from the tourists when you've got a floaty around your neck though, so if you've noticed a spike in Nessie sightings that might be why.
Nessie Jr. Crochet Toy Pattern by Clare Kibyuk
What is Being Made
Nessie Jr. is a small crocheted stuffed toy designed by Clare Kibyuk. This intermediate-level crochet project creates a playful monster character inspired by the Loch Ness Monster. The finished toy measures 2.5 inches long and 4 inches high, making it a compact decorative or gift item suitable for display or play.
Craft and Primary Technique
This pattern uses crochet as the primary construction method. The toy is worked primarily in single crochet stitches, which create a dense, sturdy fabric ideal for stuffed amigurumi-style toys. The pattern employs fundamental crochet shaping techniques including increases and decreases to form three-dimensional body parts that are then assembled together.
Stitches Used
- Magic Ring (MR) - Used to begin the head section with a closed center
- Single Crochet (sc) - The primary stitch throughout the pattern for building fabric
- Increase (inc) - Created by working 2 single crochet stitches in the same stitch to expand the fabric
- Decrease (dec) - Worked by crocheting 2 single crochet stitches together to reduce stitch count
- Slip Stitch (sl st) - Used for joining rounds
- Chain Stitch (ch) - Used for foundational chains and construction elements
Materials and Tools
Yarn: The pattern calls for Aran weight (#4) yarn in four colors. Loops and Threads Capri brand is suggested. Required amounts are minimal—less than one 50-gram ball of each color: Green for the monster's body, Blue for decorative dots, Yellow and white for a life preserver accent.
Additional Supplies: A 2.5 mm crochet hook is specified for working with the Aran weight yarn. Poly-fil fiberfill is needed for stuffing the toy to create its three-dimensional shape. Eight millimeter safety eyes provide facial features. Embroidery floss or a small amount of pink yarn adds cheek details. Armature wire, floral wire, or pipe cleaners can be incorporated into the neck area to allow poseable shaping. A tapestry needle facilitates yarn assembly and finishing, while tweezers or hemostats assist with stuffing tight spaces.
Pattern Notes and Difficulty
This pattern is rated as intermediate difficulty, appropriate for crocheters with foundational skills in basic stitches and shaping techniques. All stitches are written in US crochet terminology. The pattern begins with the head section using the magic ring method and proceeds through rows of increasing and decreasing stitches to build the characteristic shape of the toy. The inclusion of wire elements allows crafters to pose and adjust the finished toy for display purposes.
