Many years experience with my children and now grandchildren have taught me that short sleeved knitted layers are a wonderful thing! Easy on, no cuffs to drag through water and mud, no heavy sleeves to continuously push back, nothing to get in the way of play glorious play!
Neptune is a round necked top, with an easy to memorise, elastic stitch pattern which grows with your child. Neptune will see them through more than a few seasons and is easily passed down to the next sibling. The stitch pattern is both charted and written out in full for both in the round and knitting flat. The pattern has been sample knitted and professionally tech edited.

Neptune Knitted Slipover by JustJussi
What is Being Made
Neptune is a children's knitted slipover design by independent designer Justine Turner, available in sizes ranging from 6 months through 10 years old. This versatile garment is engineered as a top or waistcoat-style piece suitable for layering, with actual chest measurements spanning from 45-49 cm (18-19.5 inches) for the smallest size up to 69-72 cm (27 inches) for the largest size. The design accommodates multiple age groups and growth stages, making it a practical choice for growing children.
Stitch Techniques and Cable Work
The Neptune pattern features cable knit detailing as a central design element. The pattern utilizes two primary cable techniques:
- 1/1 LC (Left Cable): Slip the next stitch to a cable needle and hold it at the front of the work, knit the following stitch, then knit the stitch from the cable needle
- 1/1 RC (Right Cable): Slip the next stitch to a cable needle and hold it at the back of the work, knit the following stitch, then knit the stitch from the cable needle
These cable techniques create textured, dimensional surface interest throughout the garment. The stitch pattern is notably elastic, allowing the finished garment to stretch and accommodate children through multiple growth phases without requiring frequent replacement.
Construction and Finishing
The pattern employs a 3-needle bind off technique for finishing, which involves arranging stitches to be cast off on two needles with right sides together, then using a third needle to knit stitches together for a secure, professional closure.
Yarn and Materials
Neptune is designed to be worked in worsted weight yarn composed of 100% merino wool. The yardage requirements scale with size, with the smallest size requiring 210 yards and the largest size requiring 440 yards. The yarn specification of 50g equaling 88 meters (96 yards) allows knitters to calculate precise yardage needs for their chosen size. Merino wool provides softness, breathability, and natural elasticity ideal for children's garments.
Design Versatility
Listed as a slipover, top, and waistcoat design, Neptune offers multiple styling options depending on how it is worn and layered. The elastic stitch pattern makes this design particularly forgiving for fit, allowing the garment to stretch comfortably across different body shapes and sizes within each age range.
