Product Description

Nemea was a city in Ancient Greece. It was the location of one of the four separate sports festivals that were part of the Panhellenic Games. Those festivals were the precursor to the modern Olympics.

In Greek mythology, Hercules was tasked to perform twelve heroic labors to amend for his actions in killing his family. His first task was to kill the lion that had been terrorizing people in the area of Nemea. He made a clock of the pelt to wear for protection.

This fun shawl uses only one 100g fingering weight skein, so hunt down that perfect yarn to create your own protective wrap!

Nemea Shawl by flyingflowerflourishes

Design Inspiration and Concept

The Nemea Shawl draws its name from the ancient Greek city of Nemea, historically significant as the location of one of the four Panhellenic Games festivals that preceded the modern Olympics. The design is inspired by Greek mythology, specifically the first of Hercules' twelve labors: slaying the lion of Nemea. According to legend, Hercules fashioned a protective cloak from the lion's pelt. This crochet shawl captures that spirit of mythological protection in a wearable, modern wrap.

What Is Being Made

The Nemea Shawl is a crocheted triangular wrap designed as a protective, versatile garment. The shawl works up quickly from a single 100-gram skein of fingering weight yarn, making it an accessible project for crafters seeking a complete, finished piece without requiring multiple skeins. The finished shawl dimensions vary depending on blocking: unblocked, it measures 11 inches in depth with a 38-inch top edge, while blocked dimensions expand to 16 inches in depth and 45 inches across the top edge.

Crochet Techniques and Construction

This beginner-friendly crochet project employs fundamental shawl construction techniques suitable for those new to crochet or looking for a straightforward, rewarding make. The pattern utilizes basic crochet stitches to build the triangular shawl shape, allowing crafters to develop foundational skills while creating a garment with practical drape and coverage. The design is engineered to work efficiently with limited yardage, demonstrating thoughtful pattern construction that maximizes visual impact and wearability from a single skein.

Stitches and Stitch Work

While specific stitch abbreviations are not detailed in the provided pattern excerpt, the Nemea Shawl employs standard crochet stitches appropriate to beginner skill levels. The pattern's gauge is measured at rows 1 through 8 equaling 2-1/4 inches unblocked, providing a reference point for tension and finished dimensions. The stitch pattern creates a fabric suitable for blocking, as the shawl responds well to wet blocking and can be shaped more aggressively if desired by the crafter.

Materials and Yarn Specifications

The Nemea Shawl pattern calls for Oink Pigments Targhee Sock yarn in the colorway Sex & Violets. This yarn is a high-quality blend of 90% Superwash Targhee wool and 10% nylon, providing durability and easy care. One 100-gram skein contains 400 yards (365 meters) of fingering weight (4-ply) yarn, offering sufficient yardage for the complete shawl. The nylon content adds strength and resilience to the finished garment, making it suitable for regular wear as a protective wrap.

Tools and Notions

  • Crochet Hook: G-hook (4.00mm)
  • Finishing Tool: Tapestry needle for weaving in ends

Finishing and Blocking

The pattern includes blocking instructions to enhance the finished shawl's dimensions and drape. The designer soaked and laid out the shawl for finishing, though notes that more aggressive blocking is possible if desired. Blocking transforms the unblocked measurements (11" depth, 38" top edge) to the fuller blocked dimensions (16" depth, 45" top edge), creating a more dramatic triangular silhouette and improved fabric fluidity. This finishing step is accessible to beginners and significantly enhances the shawl's final appearance and wearability.

Skill Level and Accessibility

Classified as a beginner difficulty project, the Nemea Shawl is designed to be approachable for crocheters new to shawl construction. The pattern's straightforward structure, reliance on fundamental stitches, and completion from a single skein make it an ideal first shawl project. Crafters can expect a satisfying, quick-to-complete make that builds confidence in crochet fundamentals while producing a genuinely useful garment.
