Product Description
I designed Nancy with my lovely granny in mind.
Nancy was a development of my #grannyinagrannysquare pattern that I designed for Granny Square Day in 2019.
Nancy Granny Square Doll by Natalie Beard
What Is Being Made
Nancy is a crocheted amigurumi-style doll designed by Natalie Beard. This decorative doll project transforms the classic granny square concept into a three-dimensional stuffed toy figure, making it an ideal handmade decoration for craft enthusiasts. The finished doll stands approximately 26cm tall, creating a charming decorative piece suitable for display or gifting.
Craft and Techniques
This project uses crochet as the primary construction method. The doll is worked primarily in rounds using fundamental crochet techniques to build dimensional forms. The pattern employs the magic circle method to begin sections, allowing for seamless circular construction. Color changes are worked strategically throughout the design, with the instruction to change color on the final yarn over of the last stitch before the color change is indicated, ensuring clean transitions between the multiple yarn colors used in Nancy's construction.
Advanced shaping techniques include increases and decreases to form the doll's body contours. The pattern incorporates working over yarn ends where possible during construction, which reduces the number of loose ends requiring finishing work later. This efficient approach streamlines the completion process for intermediate-level crocheters.
Stitches Used
The Nancy pattern utilizes the following crochet stitches:
- Double Crochet (DC) – the primary stitch forming the foundation of the doll's structure
- Magic Circle (MC) – used to begin circular sections seamlessly
- Slip Stitch (SL ST) – for joining rounds and finishing edges
- Chain (CH) – for creating spaces and structural elements
- Treble Crochet (TR) – for textural variation
- Bobble Stitch (BBL) – created by working 5 trebles together, adding decorative dimensional detail
- Increase (INC) – for expanding sections during construction
- Decrease (DEC) – for shaping and reducing stitch counts
Materials and Yarn Specifications
Nancy is designed to work with DK weight yarn, a medium-light yarn weight ideal for creating defined stitches and smooth fabric. The pattern recommends Paintbox Cotton DK yarn, with 1x 50g balls suggested in the following colors: Mustard Yellow, Blush Pink, Washed Teal, Lipstick Pink, Peach, Orange, Light Caramel, and Marine Blue. This vibrant color palette allows crafters to customize Nancy's appearance while maintaining consistent yarn characteristics throughout the project.
Additional materials required include:
- 3.5mm crochet hook – sized appropriately for DK weight yarn to achieve the correct tension
- Toy stuffing – for filling the doll to create a three-dimensional, huggable form
- Tapestry needle – for weaving in yarn ends and seaming sections together
- Black embroidery thread – for embroidering facial features including eyes and mouth
- Scissors – for cutting yarn
Difficulty Level and Tension
This pattern is rated as intermediate difficulty, making it suitable for crocheters with foundational skills who are ready to tackle more complex shaping and color work. The pattern specifies working an even tension throughout, with a gauge of approximately 10x10 centimeters over 20 stitches by 18 rows of double crochet. Maintaining consistent tension is essential for achieving the intended finished size and ensuring all pieces fit together properly during assembly.
Pattern Abbreviations and Terminology
The pattern uses UK crochet terminology. Crafters should note that UK and US crochet terms differ significantly; for example, UK double crochet is equivalent to US single crochet. The pattern includes clear abbreviations: MC for magic circle, DC for double crochet, ST for strand, INC for increase, TR for treble crochet, BBL for bobble stitch, SL ST for slip stitch, DEC for decrease, CH for chain, and SP for space.
