Nadelgefilzter Baumschmuck „Schneeflocke" – Schachenmayr Filz-it! Design 6861

What Is Being Made

This free downloadable pattern (Design 6861) from Schachenmayr guides you through creating a beautiful needle-felted snowflake Christmas tree ornament. The finished decoration measures approximately 7 cm in diameter, making it a delicate and charming addition to any festive tree or holiday display. The design is compact and quick to complete, making it ideal for crafters who want to produce multiple handmade ornaments in a short amount of time.

Craft Technique: Needle Felting

This project uses needle felting (Nadelfilzen), a dry felting technique that does not require water or heat. Instead, a specially barbed felting needle is repeatedly pushed into loose wool fibers, tangling and compressing them together until they form a firm, cohesive fabric. This method gives the crafter precise control over shape and density, making it perfectly suited to creating defined decorative forms such as snowflakes. The wool is worked from both sides within a shaped cookie cutter mold to ensure an even, well-formed result.

Materials Used

  • Filz-it! Filzwolle (needle-felting wool) by Schachenmayr – approximately 2–3 g per snowflake, in shade 00002 Ecru, or leftover yarn from your stash. This is a chunky-weight wool specifically designed for needle felting projects.
  • Filz-it! Filznadel – a single Schachenmayr felting needle with the characteristic barbed tip required for the needle felting process.
  • Filz-it! Filzunterlage – a Schachenmayr felting mat or pad, used as the protective work surface beneath the project during needling.
  • Coats Reflecta in shade 00301 Silber (Silver) – a reflective or metallic thread used to create the hanging loop for the finished ornament, adding a sparkling, festive finish.
  • Sticknadel mit Spitze – a pointed embroidery needle used to attach the Reflecta hanging thread.
  • Tortissimo Ausstechform Schneeflocke, 7 cm (Article 17105) – a snowflake-shaped cookie cutter that serves as the mold to shape the wool during the felting process.

How the Snowflake Is Made

To create one snowflake, the Tortissimo snowflake cookie cutter is placed on the felting mat and filled evenly with approximately 2–3 g of Filz-it! Filzwolle in Ecru. The wool is then needle-felted from both sides by repeatedly turning the cutter and its contents over on the mat and working the barbed Filz-it! Filznadel through the fibers. This two-sided approach ensures the wool is evenly compressed and that the snowflake holds its shape firmly throughout. Once the felting is complete and the fibers have sufficiently bonded, the finished snowflake is carefully removed from the cookie cutter mold. Finally, a loop of Coats Reflecta in Silver is threaded through the ornament using the pointed embroidery needle to create an elegant, glittering hanger.
