Product Description

This is the hat of the year! Everyone wants this style this year, so get going and make several for gifts and one for yourself! This is easy to knit on 16 inch circular needle, US # 7 and 8. Uses worsted weight yarn (a size 4 yarn) and it has a cute "button tab" that you knit to make it look like leather to add to front of hat! Easy to knit pattern too. Fast knitters can easily make this in one day, most knitters can easily make it in less than 2 days. So there is plenty of time to knit up some for gift giving! My Favorite Hat with Button Tab

What Is Being Made

My Favorite Hat is a classic knitted hat designed to fit most adults. This beginner-friendly project features an optional decorative button tab positioned on the crown of the hat. The hat is worked seamlessly in the round, creating a comfortable, well-fitted garment from the brim to the top.

Knitting Techniques Used

This hat is constructed using fundamental knitting techniques suitable for beginners. The project employs circular knitting, which allows the hat to be worked continuously in rounds without seaming. The pattern incorporates ribbed sections for elasticity and structure at the brim, combined with stockinette stitch for the body of the hat. The crown is shaped using decreases worked on double-pointed needles during the final rounds, which gradually reduces the stitch count to close the top of the hat securely.

Stitches Used

  • Knit stitch (k) – the fundamental stitch forming the base of the fabric
  • Purl stitch (p) – used in combination with knit stitches to create ribbed texture
  • Ribbing (k1, p1) – alternating knit and purl stitches in rounds to create an elastic, fitted edge at the brim
  • Stockinette stitch – smooth purl rounds that form the main body of the hat
  • Decreases – worked during the final rounds on double-pointed needles to shape the crown

Materials and Tools

This project requires worsted weight yarn, approximately 2 ounces or 100 yards in your chosen color. The optional button tab requires an additional 4 yards of light brown yarn. Knitting needles include a 16-inch circular needle in US size 7 for the ribbed brim and a 16-inch circular needle in US size 8 for the main body. A set of 4 double-pointed needles (size 8) is needed for decreasing stitches at the crown during the final rounds. Additional supplies include a row marker to track the beginning of each round and a yarn sewing needle for weaving in ends and securing the optional button tab. The button itself should measure approximately ½ to ¾ inch in diameter.
