Product Description

Hands that give care and comfort to others deserve a lot of love and attention. So when I started to design these mitts, I wanted something pretty and elegant yet cosy and comfortable. I have used delicate cable-like stitches and lovely leaf lace motifs to achieve just that.

These elegant mitts are worked from bottom to top, following a mock cable chart. After hand stitches are inserted and increased (following a chart featuring a leaf motif), thumb stitches are held on waste yarn while the mitt top is completed. The thumb top is then is worked separately.

What is Being Made

Mudra Mitts are elegant, fingerless mitts designed to provide both beauty and comfort for hands. These mitts are crafted with a focus on delicate detailing and wearability, making them suitable for everyday wear or as a thoughtful gift for caregivers.

Design Philosophy and Inspiration

Designer Lana Jois created these mitts with the intention of honoring hands that give care and comfort to others. The design balances aesthetic appeal with practical comfort through the use of refined stitch work and luxurious materials.

Techniques Used

  • Construction Method: Mitts are worked from bottom to top in the round using small circumferences
  • Shaping: Increases are incorporated following a chart to create the desired silhouette
  • Thumb Placement: Thumb stitches are held on waste yarn while the mitt top is completed, then the thumb is worked separately
  • Chart-Based Design: The pattern utilizes charts to guide stitch placement and shaping

Stitches and Stitch Patterns

  • Mock Cable Stitch: A delicate cable-like effect created using the technique K2, yo, k1, pass first stitch over next three stitches
  • Leaf Lace Motifs: Decorative leaf-patterned lace elements incorporated throughout the design
  • Stockinette Stitch: Used as the foundational stitch structure

Materials

Yarn: Kate Davies Designs Milarrochy Tweed, a 4-ply weight yarn composed of 70% wool and 30% mohair, providing both warmth and softness. Each 25g ball yields 100 meters (109 yards). The pattern requires 2 x 25g balls in the Stockiemuir colorway.

Needles and Notions: Gauge-size needles of your preferred type for working small circumferences in the round, along with gauge-size double pointed needles for working the thumb. Waste yarn is needed for holding thumb stitches during construction.

Skill Level

These mitts are rated as an intermediate knitting project, suitable for knitters with foundational skills who are ready to work with charts, shaping techniques, and specialty stitches like mock cables and lace motifs.
