Mudita Knit Sweater by Kristen TenDyke
What is Being Made
Mudita is a knitted sweater designed by independent designer Kristen TenDyke. This downloadable knitting pattern creates a finished garment available in multiple sizes, ranging from 31 inches to 55 inches in finished bust measurement (78.5 cm to 139.5 cm). The sweater features a yoke construction, making it suitable for knitters seeking a classic, structured silhouette.
Knitting Techniques Used
The Mudita sweater employs several fundamental knitting techniques appropriate for beginner-level knitters:
- Cable Cast-on Method: The pattern uses a cable cast-on technique to establish the foundation stitches. This method involves inserting the right-hand needle between stitches on the left-hand needle and creating new stitches in a controlled manner, resulting in a sturdy, elastic edge.
- Circular Needle Knitting: The sweater is constructed using 16-inch circular needles, allowing the knitter to work in the round (in the rnd) for seamless construction.
- Yoke Shaping: The garment features yoke shaping, a technique where increases are strategically placed to create the shoulder and upper body structure.
- Increase Techniques: The pattern incorporates the m1-l (make 1 left slanting) increase method, which involves lifting the horizontal strand between stitches and working it through the back loop to create an invisible, left-leaning increase.
Stitches Used
The Mudita pattern utilizes basic knitting stitches suitable for beginner knitters. The primary stitch construction involves fundamental knit stitches (k1 notation indicates knit one stitch) combined with strategic increases for shaping. The cable cast-on creates the initial stitch definition, while the m1-l increase adds shaping detail without creating visible holes or eyelets.
Materials: Yarn and Needles
The Mudita sweater is designed to be worked in worsted weight yarn, a medium-weight yarn category ideal for creating garments with good drape and structure.
Yarn Specifications: The pattern is shown in Pakucho worsted, a 100% certified organic color-grown cotton yarn. Each 50-gram hank provides approximately 88 yards of yardage. The sample shown uses the color Forest Mist V05. Depending on the finished size selected, the pattern requires between 5 and 11 hanks of yarn (440 to 968 yards total).
Needles Required: The pattern calls for 16-inch circular needles appropriate for worsted weight yarn, enabling seamless in-the-round construction.
