Product Description
Spookily cute, this fanged chap is more friend than fiend! Try playing with the mouth position to make a happy or angry monster to give your toy real personality. Designed by Amanda Berry @fluffandfuzz, Mr Monster is knitted in acrylic DK yarns in the round to minimise seaming, although there is a little sewing together to do at the end. For confident beginners and above, other techniques used include casting on and off, knits, purls, knitting stripes, increases and decreases.
Mr Monster Knitting Pattern by Amanda Berry
What is Being Made
Mr Monster is a spookily cute stuffed toy character designed by Amanda Berry. This intermediate-level knitting project creates a friendly, fanged monster with personality. The finished toy features a charming combination of knitted fabric components, making it an engaging project for knitters looking to create handmade playthings or decorative pieces.
Knitting Techniques Used
This pattern employs several fundamental knitting techniques suitable for intermediate crafters. The monster is knitted in the round to minimize seaming, which is an efficient construction method that reduces finishing work. The pattern utilizes magic loop technique or traditional double-pointed needles (DPNs), both of which are essential skills for working small circumference projects. Stitch markers are used throughout to track pattern repeats and construction points, helping maintain consistency in the circular knitting process.
Stitches and Construction Details
The pattern begins with a cast-on of 9 stitches in green yarn, establishing the foundation for the body piece. The round construction method means stitches are worked continuously in circular rows rather than flat pieces that require seaming. This technique is particularly valuable for toy making, as it creates fewer seams where stuffing might escape and produces a more cohesive, professional-looking finished object.
Materials Required
Yarn: The pattern calls for DK weight yarn (also known as double knitting, light worsted, or 8 ply yarn). Three yarn shades are needed to create the monster's color-blocked design. The sample photographed was created using Hayfield Bonus DK, a 100% acrylic yarn available in 100g skeins with 330 meters per skein. The three specific colors used were Grass (green), Neon (purple), and White. Similar DK weight 100% acrylic yarns are recommended as suitable alternatives.
Needles and Tools: Crafters will need a set of 3.25mm (US size 3) double-pointed needles or a 80cm circular needle for magic loop knitting. Additional notions include a darning or tapestry needle for seaming and weaving in ends, and a stitch marker for tracking rounds.
Finishing Materials: A 200g bag of toy filling is required to stuff the completed knitted body. Three 10mm domed black buttons serve as eyes, providing character and expression to the finished monster. White felt fabric triangles are used to create teeth, which are attached using glue, adding to the playful, fanged appearance described in the pattern introduction.
Pattern Summary
Mr Monster represents an accessible intermediate knitting project that combines basic circular knitting skills with creative finishing techniques. The use of DK weight yarn and 3.25mm needles creates a manageable fabric weight that's easy to work with while still producing a sturdy toy suitable for play or display. The color-blocking technique using three distinct yarn shades—green, purple, and white—creates visual interest and dimension in the finished piece. By knitting in the round from the start, the pattern minimizes the need for complex seaming while maintaining structural integrity for a stuffed toy. The combination of knitted components with button eyes and felt teeth demonstrates how simple embellishments can transform a basic knitted form into a character with personality and charm.
