Product Description

This pattern is designed for the specialty colorway in Spincycle Yarns made for the Black Mountain Yarn Shop. This colorway looks like the Blue Ridge Mountains you can see from the shop, so I wanted a scarf that would highlight the mountains the yarn was dyed for!

The subtle wavy pattern throughout the scarf reminds me of the rolling hills near Black Mountain, although it would look great in a blue yarn for an ocean theme.

Mountain Scarf by Engineered Artistry

What Is Being Made

The Mountain Scarf is a crochet accessory designed to celebrate the natural landscape that inspired its creation. This finished scarf measures 5 inches wide by 6 feet long, making it a versatile neck accessory suitable for layering or draping. The pattern was specifically engineered to complement the Spincycle Yarns specialty colorway created for Black Mountain Yarn Shop, a yarn dyed to evoke the appearance of the Blue Ridge Mountains visible from the shop's location.

Design Inspiration and Visual Effect

The scarf features a subtle wavy pattern that runs throughout its length, reminiscent of the rolling hills characteristic of the mountain region near Black Mountain. While the pattern was originally designed to showcase the mountain-inspired colorway of the Spincycle Dream State yarn in the Eventide colorway, the stitch pattern is versatile enough to work beautifully in other color palettes. A solid blue yarn would transform the same pattern into an ocean-themed accessory, demonstrating the adaptability of the design.

Crochet Techniques and Stitches Used

This beginner-level crochet pattern employs a variety of fundamental stitches to create its distinctive wavy texture. The pattern utilizes the following stitches in sequence:

  • Chain (ch) – the foundation stitch used to create the initial base
  • Treble crochet (tr) – a tall stitch that creates height variation
  • Double crochet (dc) – a medium-height stitch used throughout the pattern
  • Half double crochet (hdc) – a stitch between single and double crochet in height
  • Single crochet (sc) – a short, tight stitch for texture
  • Slip stitch (sl st) – used to join rounds or create subtle transitions
  • Back loop only (blo) – a technique where stitches are worked through only the back loop, creating additional textural interest

The pattern begins with a foundation chain of 28 stitches. Row 2 establishes the stitch pattern by working into the 4th chain from the hook, then repeating a sequence of stitches (treble crochet, double crochet, half double crochet, single crochet, slip stitch) across the row. This repeating sequence of varying stitch heights is what creates the subtle wavy, undulating appearance that gives the scarf its mountain-inspired aesthetic.

Materials and Tools Required

This project requires minimal materials, making it an accessible choice for crocheters of all experience levels:

  • Yarn: 2 skeins of Spincycle Dream State in the Eventide colorway (or any worsted weight yarn of your choice)
  • Hook: 5 mm crochet hook
  • Notions: Tapestry needle for weaving in ends

The pattern calls for worsted weight yarn, a medium yarn weight that works up quickly and provides good stitch definition for showcasing the varied stitch pattern. The 5 mm hook size is appropriate for worsted weight yarn and helps achieve the specified gauge.

Gauge and Sizing

The pattern specifies a gauge of 12 rows in pattern and 24 stitches equaling 4 inches. Achieving proper gauge is important for obtaining the finished dimensions of 5 inches wide by 6 feet long. Crocheters should work a gauge swatch before beginning the project to ensure their tension matches the pattern specifications.

Skill Level

This pattern is rated as beginner difficulty, making it suitable for crocheters who are comfortable with basic stitches and can follow written instructions. While the pattern uses multiple stitch types, each stitch is fundamental to crochet, and the repetitive nature of the row structure makes it manageable for those new to the craft.
