Product Description
The Mount Princeton Hat is so soft and warm. I use a unique stitch combination for additional warmth. Even so, it’s a quick knit…you’ll want to make one in every color!
This hat is knit on a 36-peg (for adult medium) or a 40-peg (for adult large) 3/4” gauge round loom.
The hat uses approximately 100 yards of Lion Brand’s Hometown yarn (a #6-super bulky) in the Houston Cream colorway for the body and 10 yards of Lion Brand’s Hometown yarn in Providence Pink colorway for the pom pom. This pattern is suitable for an advanced beginner loom knitter.
Mount Princeton Hat – Loom Knit Pattern by Dayna Scoles Designs
What Is Being Made
The Mount Princeton Hat is a beginner-friendly loom knit hat designed for crafters of all skill levels. This downloadable PDF pattern produces a finished hat using super bulky yarn, making it a quick and satisfying project. The design features a folded brim and a coordinating pom pom, creating a classic, polished look suitable for cold-weather wear.
Loom and Equipment
This pattern is worked on a 3/4" gauge Knifty Knitter 36-peg round loom, a standard loom knitting tool that makes the process accessible for beginners. The round loom shape naturally creates the tubular construction needed for a hat without seaming.
Yarn Requirements and Colorway
The Mount Princeton Hat uses Lion Brand Hometown yarn, a super bulky (#6) weight that works up quickly on the large-gauge loom. The pattern calls for:
- 100 yards of Hometown yarn in the Houston Cream colorway for the main hat body
- 10 yards of Hometown yarn in the Providence Pink colorway for the pom pom accent
The two-color combination creates visual interest while keeping yarn requirements minimal, making this an economical project.
Stitches and Techniques Used
The Mount Princeton Hat employs several fundamental loom knitting stitches that build skills while remaining manageable for beginners:
- E-wrap knit stitch (k) – A basic loom knit stitch that creates a smooth, structured fabric
- U-knit stitch (u) – An alternative knit stitch variation used in loom knitting
- Purl stitch (p) – A textured stitch that adds visual dimension to the design
- Twisted purl stitch (twp) – A custom stitch variation where the loop is twisted before being returned to the peg, worked in the same direction on each peg for uniformity. This technique creates the appearance of an e-wrap knit stitch on the inside of the hat, which becomes visible when the brim is folded up
- Garter stitch – A classic textured pattern created by alternating knit and purl rows, featured in the main body of the hat
- K1, p1 ribbing – An alternating knit-and-purl pattern that creates elasticity, commonly used in hat brims and cuffs
Pattern Structure and Construction
The pattern includes a garter stitch section for the main hat body, which creates a ridged, textured appearance. The designer provides a "Garter Ridge Hack" technique to speed up the process of knitting garter ridges, offering time-saving shortcuts for crafters. The brim features k1, p1 ribbing that provides stretch and a professional finish. The two-color pom pom adds a playful finishing touch to the crown.
Skill Level
Rated as a beginner pattern, the Mount Princeton Hat is ideal for those new to loom knitting. The straightforward stitch combinations and round loom construction eliminate the need for complex shaping or seaming, making it an excellent first project or a quick gift option for experienced crafters.
