Mosaic Crochet Rug and Basket by SiennaIvyCrochet

What Is Being Made

This downloadable PDF pattern from independent designer SiennaIvyCrochet provides instructions for creating a mosaic crochet rug and coordinating basket using the mosaic crochet technique. The project is suitable for intermediate-level crocheters and uses super chunky yarn for quick, satisfying results.

Mosaic Crochet Technique Overview

Mosaic crochet is a colorwork method that creates intricate geometric patterns without carrying yarn across rows. Instead of traditional stranded colorwork, this technique uses strategic placement of stitches to reveal contrasting colors in a mosaic-like design. The method involves working with two colors of yarn (colour A and colour B) and alternating between them across rows to build the pattern from a provided chart.

The key to mosaic crochet is understanding how stitches are placed to either show or hide the previous row's color. By working into specific loops of stitches from non-consecutive rows, the crocheter can create the illusion of a complex colorwork pattern while only working with one color per row. This eliminates the need for color changes mid-row and makes the technique more manageable than traditional intarsia or stranded crochet.

Stitches and Stitch Techniques Used

  • Single Crochet (sc): The foundation stitch used throughout the project
  • Back Loop Only Single Crochet (blsc): Worked into the back loop only of stitches from the previous row. This technique preserves the front loop for use in subsequent rows, allowing the mosaic pattern to develop. Stitches with no symbol on the chart are worked as blsc
  • Front Loop Only Double Crochet (fldc): Worked into the front loop only of stitches from the row before the previous row (skipping the last row worked). This stitch covers the contrasting color row and creates the visible mosaic pattern. Stitches marked with an X symbol on the chart are worked as fldc
  • Double Crochet (dc): Used in conjunction with front loop techniques
  • Slip Stitch (sl st): Used for joining rounds
  • Treble Crochet (tr): Available for pattern variations
  • Invisible Join: A finishing technique for seamless round closures, worked by cutting yarn and securing with a tapestry needle

Materials Required

This project uses super chunky weight yarn, which creates a dense, substantial fabric ideal for rugs and baskets. The material requirements are:

  • 600g ribbon yarn in colour A
  • 400g ribbon yarn in colour B
  • 7mm crochet hook (primary hook size)
  • 6mm crochet hook (secondary hook size)
  • Tapestry needle (for weaving in ends and invisible joins)

The use of ribbon yarn—a flat, wide yarn—adds visual interest and texture to the finished mosaic pattern, making the geometric designs particularly striking.

Gauge and Sizing

The pattern specifies a gauge of 12 stitches by 12 rows equals 10 centimeters. This gauge measurement is essential for achieving the correct finished size and should be checked before beginning the project to ensure proper dimensions for the rug and basket.

Pattern Chart and Instructions

The pattern includes a detailed chart that guides the placement of stitches. The chart uses two symbols to indicate stitch placement: blank squares represent stitches to be worked as back loop only single crochet (blsc), while X symbols indicate stitches to be worked as front loop only double crochet (fldc) into the corresponding stitch from two rows prior. Following the chart carefully is crucial to achieving the correct mosaic pattern.

The accompanying notes provide clear abbreviations using US crochet terminology and detailed explanations of how each stitch technique contributes to the mosaic effect. Understanding the relationship between working into back loops and front loops, and knowing which row to reference for each stitch, is fundamental to the success of this project.

Project Difficulty and Skill Level

Rated as intermediate difficulty, this project requires familiarity with basic crochet stitches and the ability to read and follow a chart. The mosaic technique itself adds complexity beyond beginner-level work, but the logical structure of the method makes it accessible to crocheters ready to expand their skills. The use of super chunky yarn means the work progresses relatively quickly, making it an
