What Is Being Made

The finished project is a lap or throw-sized quilt measuring 54 inches wide by 66 inches tall. The design features a classic chain block layout, where interlocking chain units create a visually dynamic, repeating geometric pattern across the quilt surface. The chain motif is achieved by combining colorful Jelly Roll strip prints against a contrasting solid or low-volume background fabric, producing a bold graphic effect that works beautifully with almost any Jelly Roll collection. The pattern is specifically designed to showcase the Remix fabric collection by Moda Fabrics.

Materials Required

Fabric

• Chain Prints: 1 Remix Jelly Roll (a precut bundle of 2½"-wide strips, typically 40 strips per roll)
• Background and Border Fabric: 3½ yards of a coordinating background fabric
• Binding: 8 Jelly Roll strips set aside from the bundle, or alternatively ¾ yard of yardage fabric
• Backing: 4 yards of backing fabric

Tools and Notions

• Rotary cutter, quilting ruler, and self-healing cutting mat for precise strip and subcut work
• Sewing machine capable of a scant ¼" seam allowance
• Pressing iron for seam setting and block accuracy
• Standard quilting thread in a coordinating color

Cutting Instructions Overview

Jelly Roll Strips

• Set aside 8 strips from the Jelly Roll for binding
• Select 13 Jelly Roll strips for the chain pieces and cut each in half to yield 26 strips measuring 2½" x 22"
• From the remaining Jelly Roll strips, cut 6 squares measuring 2½" x 2½" for chain pieces used in the sashing sections

Background Fabric

• Cut 4 strips at 10½" x width of fabric (WOF), then subcut into:
  • 3 pieces at 10½" x 22"
  • 25 pieces at 10½" x 2½"
  • 4 squares at 4½" x 4½"
• Cut 5 strips at 6½" x WOF, then subcut into:
  • 5 pieces at 6½" x 22"
  • 40 pieces at 6½" x 2½"
• Cut 12 strips at 2½" x WOF:
  • Select 6 strips and cut each in half to yield 11 strips at 2½" x 22"
  • Select the remaining 6 strips, sew them together end-to-end, then cut:
    • 2 border strips at 2½" x 62½"
    • 2 border strips at 2½" x 54½"
