Misu the Sloth Crochet Pattern
What is Being Made
Misu is a crocheted amigurumi sloth toy designed by Sonja van der Wijk, creator of Son's Popkes. This is a downloadable PDF crochet pattern for creating a finished sloth doll measuring approximately 5.2 inches (13 centimeters) in height. The pattern produces a three-dimensional stuffed toy suitable for display, gifting, or collection.
Craft and Techniques
This project uses crochet as the primary construction method. The sloth is worked in the round using spiral techniques, which means stitches are crocheted continuously in circular rows rather than turning the work back and forth. The pattern recommends using a stitch marker to clearly identify the beginning of each round, moving the marker up as new rounds progress to maintain consistent stitch placement and structure.
The pattern incorporates color changes throughout the design. More complex color transitions are indicated with color coding within the written instructions for easy reference, while simpler color changes are noted at the end of round descriptions. Color changes are executed in the final loop of a stitch, ensuring the new yarn color appears on the hook as you begin the next stitch.
The finished dimensions of the toy are dependent on the specific yarn weight selected and individual crochet tension, making it useful to experiment with proportions such as eye size despite the designer's recommendations.
Stitches Used
The pattern is written using standard American crochet terminology. While specific stitch names are not detailed in the provided excerpt, typical amigurumi patterns of this style employ fundamental stitches such as single crochet, slip stitch, and increases and decreases to shape the three-dimensional form.
Materials and Yarn
The pattern calls for worsted weight yarn. The designer strongly recommends using a fuzzy yarn for optimal aesthetic results. The specific yarn used in the original design is Istex Lètt lopi, a 100% wool yarn that provides the characteristic soft, textured appearance suitable for a sloth toy. Yarn weight and personal crochet tension will affect the final size of the completed doll, so yarn selection should be considered carefully if a specific finished dimension is desired.
Difficulty Level
This pattern is rated as intermediate difficulty, indicating it is suitable for crocheters with foundational skills and experience working with basic stitches and shaping techniques. The color-changing elements and spiral construction require attention to detail and familiarity with managing yarn transitions and stitch markers.
