Product Description
This funky Minion inspired hat is a must for any minion lovers. This pattern has three sizes which should fit most of the heads. Fits heads of 16”- 22” (41 - 56cm). Finished measurement approximately 16” (41cm) small, 19” (48cm) medium, and 22” (56cm) large in circumference unstretched. Approximately 1 ball each of medium worsted yarn in yellow and blue (for my minions hat I used Bernat Handicrafter cotton in lemon and blueberry color), remnants of white, black and grey colored yarn.

What Is Being Made
The Minion Hat is a fun, character-inspired knitted hat designed to fit a range of head sizes from small children to adults. This downloadable knitting pattern creates a finished hat with circumference options of approximately 16 inches (small), 19 inches (medium), or 22 inches (large), accommodating heads measuring 16 to 22 inches. The design captures the playful aesthetic of minion characters through strategic use of contrasting yarn colors in yellow, blue, white, black, and grey.
Techniques Used
This beginner-friendly knitting pattern employs fundamental techniques suitable for knitters new to the craft. The hat is constructed using knitting in the round, a core method for creating seamless cylindrical garments. The pattern incorporates essential shaping techniques including increases and decreases to form the crown and body of the hat. Knitters will practice I-cord construction, a technique where stitches are knitted from one needle to another without turning, creating a decorative cord element. The pattern also includes color work opportunities through the use of multiple yarn colors to achieve the minion character design.
Stitches Used
The Minion Hat pattern utilizes basic knitting stitches appropriate for beginner-level projects. Key stitches include:
- Stockinette stitch — the primary stitch used throughout the hat, created by alternating knit and purl rows, providing a smooth, classic fabric texture
- KFB (Knit in Front and Back) — an increase stitch that creates two stitches from one, used for shaping the hat's crown and body
- SSK (Slip, Slip, Knit) — a left-leaning decrease that reduces two stitches to one, used for crown shaping
- K2tog (Knit 2 Together) — a right-leaning decrease that reduces two stitches to one, used for tapering and finishing
- I-cord — a tubular cord technique used for decorative elements or edging
Materials and Tools
The Minion Hat requires worsted weight yarn in multiple colors. Approximately one ball each of medium worsted yarn in yellow and blue forms the primary color palette; the pattern specifically mentions Bernat Handicrafter cotton in lemon and blueberry as suitable yarn choices. Additional small amounts of white, black, and grey yarn are needed for facial features and details, using yarn remnants already on hand.
Essential knitting tools include US #5 (3.75mm) double-pointed needles in a set of five for knitting in the round, though knitters may substitute their preferred needles for circular knitting. Additional notions required are a yarn needle for weaving in ends, scissors, and stitch markers to track pattern sections and maintain stitch placement during construction.
Gauge and Sizing
The pattern specifies a gauge of 18 stitches and 27 rows over 4 inches in stockinette stitch. Achieving the correct gauge is essential for producing a hat that fits properly across the three available size options. The flexibility of three finished circumference measurements makes this pattern adaptable for different age groups and head sizes.
