Product Description
This pattern I designed after I finished a pillow pattern design and I wanted to use the scraps to make a matching decoration. I used the beginning of another pattern I designed to start with and then added a few edging details.
This Mini Scrappy Mandala Wall Hanging can also use other cotton yarn scraps you may have in your stash and you could make it any size and use a crochet hook to match your yarn.
This pattern uses less than 50g of bulky cotton yarn and I used a 6 mm crochet hook.
Enjoy making it and please share your finished makes with me.
Mini Scrappy Mandala Crochet Decoration
What Is Being Made
The Mini Scrappy Mandala is a small decorative crochet piece designed by Amanda Shaskey. This finished project measures approximately 6.5 inches (16.5 centimetres) in diameter, making it an ideal size for ornaments, embellishments, or standalone decorative accents. The pattern is perfect for using up yarn scraps from other projects, as it requires only 50 grams of bulky cotton yarn in three different colours.
Techniques and Stitches Used
This intermediate-level crochet pattern employs several fundamental crochet techniques to create its mandala structure. The design begins with a magic ring foundation, formed by chaining and joining with a slip stitch to create a circular base.
The pattern utilizes the following crochet stitches throughout its construction:
- Chain (CH) – used to create foundation rings and decorative spaces between stitches
- Slip Stitch (SL ST) – used to join rounds and connect yarn colours seamlessly
- Single Crochet (SC) – creates tight, dense fabric in the base rounds
- Half Double Crochet (HDC) – provides medium height stitches for shaping petals
- Double Crochet (DC) – taller stitches that form the mandala's radiating pattern
The pattern incorporates colour changes between rounds, allowing crafters to transition from one yarn colour to the next by joining with a slip stitch. The design also uses the back loop only (BLO) technique for specific stitch placement, which creates textural definition in the finished piece.
Materials and Tools
This project requires DMC Natura XL Bulky Cotton yarn in three different colours (50 grams total). The bulky yarn weight allows for quick completion and creates a substantial, visible mandala design. A 6.00mm crochet hook is used throughout the pattern, paired with a yarn needle for weaving in ends and scissors for cutting yarn.
The pattern is written in US crochet terminology and is available as a free downloadable PDF format, making it accessible for crocheters at the intermediate skill level.
