What is Being Made
The Mill Cap is a uniform-inspired knitted cap designed for practical warmth during work in textile mills. This beginner-friendly hat is sized to fit multiple head circumferences, ranging from baby through adult sizes. The design accommodates head circumferences of 36 cm (14 ¼"), 40.5 cm (16"), 46.5 cm (18 ½"), 51 cm (20 ¼"), 57 cm (22 ½"), and 61.5 cm (24 ¼"). The cap is engineered to provide protection during cool spring days and early winter chills, making it suitable for both functional workwear and everyday wear.
Knitting Techniques Used
The Mill Cap employs several fundamental knitting techniques appropriate for beginners. The pattern utilizes working in the round, which can be accomplished using either double-pointed needles (DPNs) or circular needles according to the knitter's preferred method. The construction incorporates wrap and turn (W&T) shaping, a technique used to create contoured sections of the hat. This method allows the cap to achieve a proper fit across different head sizes while maintaining structural integrity.
Stitches Used
The Mill Cap pattern relies on basic knitting stitches that make it accessible to beginner-level knitters. The primary stitch is stocking stitch (also known as stockinette stitch), which creates the smooth, classic fabric texture of the finished cap. The pattern also incorporates purl stitches and purl two stitches together (P2tog) for shaping and decreasing. These fundamental stitches combine to create the structured yet comfortable fit of the finished hat.
Yarn and Materials
The Mill Cap is knitted using John Arbon Textiles Exmoor Zwartbles, a 4-ply yarn composed of 70% Exmoor Blueface and 30% Zwartbles wool. One 100-gram skein provides 437 yards (400 meters) of yarn, which is sufficient to complete the project. The recommended shade is Light. Knitting is worked on 3mm needles (US size 2), available in either double-pointed or circular needle formats. The pattern requires a gauge of 27 stitches over 10 centimeters (4 inches) in stocking stitch worked in the round on 3mm needles after blocking. Additional notions include a darning needle for finishing and a stitch marker to track rounds during construction.
Difficulty Level
This pattern is classified as beginner level, making it an excellent introduction to hat knitting. While the design includes shaping techniques such as wrap and turn, the straightforward stitch vocabulary and clear construction method make it accessible to knitters new to circular knitting and garment construction.
