Product Description

A textured, cabled hat with options for a garter-stitch brim worked flat, then grafted together and joined for working in the round, picking up stitches for the main body; the second option is without a brim, simplified, with a pretty effect at the edge from the natural flare of the cables.

Instructions are provided both charted and written.

My sample knit in Shelter used up almost exactly 1 full skein of yarn, with less than a foot left over; to be safe, and taking into account minor variations in personal gauge, the pattern calls for 2 skeins.

Midna Cabled Hat by Leila Raabe

What is Being Made

Midna is an advanced-level knitted hat designed by independent designer Leila Raabe. This downloadable PDF pattern offers two distinct construction options: a Garter Brim version and a Brimless version. Both versions are sized to fit an average adult head measuring 22–23 inches in circumference, with an unstretched circumference of 21 inches and a finished height of 7.5–8.5 inches. The design emphasizes textural interest through cable work combined with twisted stitch elements, creating a sophisticated and visually dynamic hat.

Design Variations

The pattern provides flexibility through two subtly but distinctly different construction methods. The Garter Brim version begins with a traditional garter stitch edge, while the Brimless version showcases the natural "cable splay" effect, allowing the bottom edge to flare organically. This design choice allows knitters to select the version that best suits their aesthetic preference and desired finished appearance.

Techniques Used

  • Cable Work: The hat features prominent cable stitches that create texture and visual interest throughout the design
  • Twisted Stitches: Twisted stitch elements are incorporated to add complexity and depth to the overall fabric
  • Provisional Cast-On: The Garter Brim version uses a provisional cast-on method with waste yarn, allowing for seamless joining or alternative finishing techniques
  • Stockinette Stitch: Used as the base fabric for gauge measurement and construction
  • Garter Stitch: Forms the brim edge in the Garter Brim version
  • Circular Knitting: Constructed in the round using double-pointed needles for seamless construction

Stitches and Stitch Patterns

The primary stitch patterns include cable stitches for textural definition, twisted stitches for added complexity, stockinette stitch for the main fabric, and garter stitch for the brim option. The gauge is established at 18 stitches and 24 rows over 4 inches in stockinette stitch, which is essential for achieving the correct finished dimensions.

Materials Required

Yarn: Worsted-weight yarn is specified for this project. The Garter Brim version requires 150 yards (137 meters), while the Brimless version requires 160 yards (146 meters). The sample shown in the Garter Brim version uses Brooklyn Tweed Shelter, a worsted-weight yarn available in 50-gram skeins with 140 yards per skein; 2 skeins in the colorway 'Soot' were used. The Brimless version sample features Quince & Co. Lark, also a worsted-weight yarn in 50-gram skeins with 134 yards per skein; 2 skeins in the colorway 'Twig' were used.

Needles and Notions: Size 7 US (4.5 mm) double-pointed needles are required, or the size necessary to achieve the correct gauge. Additional notions include a cable needle for managing cable stitches, one stitch marker for tracking rounds, a tapestry needle for weaving in ends, and a crochet hook similar in size to the gauge needle for working with the provisional cast-on in the Garter Brim version.

Skill Level

This pattern is designated as advanced difficulty, reflecting the complexity of cable work, the use of provisional cast-on techniques, and the attention to detail required for proper gauge and shaping. Knitters should be comfortable with cable manipulation, circular knitting on double-pointed needles, and interpreting stitch patterns before attempting this design.
