Knitting Techniques Used

This tea cosy employs several fundamental knitting techniques to construct its various components. The main body of the cosy uses a double-strand knitting method, where two strands of double knit yarn are worked simultaneously on larger needles to create a thicker, warmer fabric. Additional pieces are worked using single-strand knitting on smaller needles for more refined details and finishing elements. The pattern incorporates shaping techniques including increases and decreases to achieve the proper fit over the teapot's rounded form.

Materials and Gauge Information

The Michael Higgins tea cosy requires double knit (DK) weight yarn worked in two different ways depending on the component. For the main cosy body, two strands of DK yarn are held together and worked on 4.5mm needles, achieving a gauge of 15 stitches and 24 rows over a 10cm square in stocking stitch. This double-strand approach creates the insulating warmth necessary for a functional tea cosy. All other pieces use a single strand of DK yarn on 3mm needles, with a gauge of 25 stitches and 34 rows over a 10cm square in stocking stitch.
