Metallurgy: Ironwork-Inspired Cable and Lace Accessory by Meghan Jackson
What is Being Made
Metallurgy is a versatile single-skein knitting project designed by Meghan Jackson that can be crafted as either a scarf or cowl. The design draws inspiration from ironwork, featuring cable and lace elements that create visual interest through texture and openwork. This accessory project offers knitters the flexibility to choose their preferred finished garment style while working from a single skein of yarn.
Project Options and Finished Dimensions
- Scarf version: Approximately 84 inches (213.5 centimeters) long and 3.5 inches (9 centimeters) wide
- Cowl version: A circular neckwear option created using the same pattern structure
Knitting Techniques and Stitches
Metallurgy employs advanced-level knitting techniques that combine structural and decorative elements. The design incorporates cable stitches that create raised, twisted columns of texture reminiscent of metalwork, paired with lace stitches that introduce openwork and negative space throughout the piece. These techniques work together to produce an accessory with both dimensional texture and delicate, airy sections.
The cable work may be executed with a cable needle, though this tool is listed as optional, allowing experienced knitters flexibility in their approach. The combination of cables and lace requires intermediate to advanced stitch knowledge and the ability to manage multiple stitch types within a single project.
Yarn and Needle Requirements
This pattern accommodates different yarn weights and needle sizes depending on which version you choose to knit:
- Scarf version: US #5 (3.75mm) needles (circular or straight) with Malabrigo Arroyo yarn
- Cowl version: US #13 (9mm) needles (circular or straight) with Malabrigo Rasta yarn
Yarn Specifications
For the scarf: Malabrigo Arroyo in colorway 43 Plomo (1 skein). This yarn is 100% superwash merino with 335 yards (306 meters) per 100-gram (3.5-ounce) skein, classified as sport weight.
For the cowl: Malabrigo Rasta in colorway 856 Azules (1 skein). This yarn is 100% superwash merino with 90 yards (82 meters) per 150-gram (5.25-ounce) skein, a heavier weight that works with larger needles to create appropriate fabric density.
Gauge Information
Achieving proper gauge is essential for this advanced project:
- Scarf gauge: 20 stitches and 28 rows per 4-inch (10-centimeter) square in stockinette stitch after blocking
- Cowl gauge: 10 stitches and 12 rows per 4-inch (10-centimeter) square in stockinette stitch after blocking
Both versions require blocking to achieve final dimensions and to properly set the cable and lace stitches, allowing the ironwork-inspired design to fully develop and display its intended structure.
Difficulty Level
Metallurgy is rated as an advanced knitting project, suitable for experienced knitters who are comfortable working with cable stitches, lace patterns, and managing gauge across textured stitch work. The combination of techniques and the need for blocking expertise make this an ideal project for knitters seeking to refine their skills with complex stitch integration.
