Product Description
I always had a fascination with greek and classicism architecture. The simple elegance of a black and white mosaic or a doric pillar. So I put a doric pillar and the most classic greek pattern, the meander pattern, into a shawl pattern.
The shawl is knitted top-down in a faroer construction and with a knitted-on boarder.
The pattern provides charts as well a written description for the lace parts. The lace is easy enough for an adventures beginner who wants to try their hands onto their first lace shawl.
- Sizing / Finished Measurements: 57 inches wingspan x 18.5 inches height at spine after blocking (146cm x 47cm)
Meander Shawl by Atalante
Design Overview
The Meander Shawl is an intermediate-level knitted shawl inspired by classical Greek architecture and design. Designer Lotta Groeger drew inspiration from the elegant simplicity of ancient Greek mosaics and the iconic Doric pillar, translating these architectural elements into a wearable textile pattern. The shawl features the meander pattern, one of the most recognizable motifs in classical Greek design, combined with structural elements that echo the proportions and geometry of Doric columns.
Construction Technique
This shawl is constructed using a distinctive modular approach that begins with a small cast-on and builds outward. The pattern starts with three stitches cast on, worked in garter stitch for 47 rows to create the foundation. The work is then rotated 90 degrees clockwise, and stitches are picked up from the garter bumps along the side edge and from the cast-on edge, creating a three-dimensional base structure. This technique allows the shawl to grow organically from a central point while maintaining clean, defined edges.
Stitches and Pattern Work
The Meander Shawl employs several fundamental knitting stitches and techniques:
- Garter Stitch: Used for the initial foundation rows and maintained as border stitches throughout. Three stitches on each edge are worked consistently in garter stitch to create a stable, finished frame for the pattern.
- Stockinette Stitch: The main body of the shawl is worked in stockinette stitch, providing a smooth surface that allows the meander pattern to stand out clearly.
- Meander Pattern: The central design is worked from a chart or written description, featuring the classic Greek meander motif that gives the shawl its name and visual interest.
- Stitch Pickup: A key technique in this pattern, where live stitches are picked up from existing edges to expand the fabric in a controlled manner.
Materials and Specifications
The Meander Shawl is designed to be worked in 4-ply fingering weight yarn, requiring approximately 437 yards (400 meters) of yarn. The pattern recommends using a US 6 (4.00mm) circular needle measuring at least 24 inches (60 centimeters) in length. The sample shown in the pattern was knitted in Drachenwolle Sockenwolle mit Wolle Seide, a yarn blend that combines wool with silk for added sheen and drape—ideal for showcasing the geometric meander pattern.
Difficulty Level
Rated as intermediate, the Meander Shawl requires knitters to be comfortable with fundamental techniques including garter stitch, stockinette stitch, reading charts or written pattern instructions, and picking up stitches from edges. The geometric nature of the meander pattern demands attention to detail and pattern awareness, making it suitable for knitters who have completed several projects and are ready to tackle more complex stitch patterns and construction methods.
