Product Description
Mealach means honeyed in Scottish Gaelic, the perfect name for a cowlette knit in this beautiful Winnie the Pooh inspired yarn! A lacey honeycomb brioche border and textured slipped stitch bands gives beautiful detail to the edge of the cowlette. This is a fun knit and makes a fantastic easy to wear accessory, perfect for when you’re out and about! Stretched well during blocking the honeycomb pattern retains a slightly textured pattern, but also gives a beautiful lacey effect.
The pattern is fully written and charted so whichever way you like to read your patterns, you’re covered! The pattern has been tech edited and test knitted. There’s a screenshot of the pattern and a list of the stitches used at the bottom of the photos.
Mealach has a matching shawl in three sizes! Check out Cìr-Mheala to see all the details.
Mealach Cowlette by Liz Corke
What is Being Made
Mealach is a knitted cowlette designed by Liz Corke, inspired by Winnie the Pooh. The name "Mealach" means honeyed in Scottish Gaelic, reflecting the honey-themed yarn choice and design aesthetic. This is a versatile neck accessory perfect for everyday wear, offering both style and comfort for those on the go.
Finished Dimensions
- Top circumference: 64 cm (25 inches)
- Depth at front: 55 cm (21 inches)
Techniques and Stitches Used
Mealach employs several intermediate-level knitting techniques to create visual interest and texture. The design features a lacey honeycomb brioche border that adds delicate detail to the edges of the cowlette. This is complemented by textured slipped stitch bands that run along the perimeter, creating dimension and a refined finish. The main fabric is worked in stocking stitch, which provides a smooth, classic base that allows the decorative edging techniques to stand out. The pattern is worked flat on circular needles, making it accessible for knitters who prefer this construction method.
Materials and Gauge
The Mealach cowlette is designed to be knitted with 4-ply weight yarn, specifically using Giddy Yarns Merino Singles in the colorway "Hunny" and "Haycorns." This yarn is 100% Merino wool in a single ply construction, with 400 yards per 100 grams. The pattern requires approximately 366 meters (400 yards) of yarn.
The recommended gauge is 22 stitches and 36 rows over 10 centimeters (4 inches) in stocking stitch, measured after blocking when worked flat. Knitters should use 4 mm (US 6) circular needles measuring 60 centimeters (24 inches) in length. Additional materials include stitch markers, a yarn needle for finishing, and blocking supplies. Note that variations in individual gauge will affect both the yardage required and the final dimensions of the finished cowlette.
Difficulty Level
This pattern is rated as intermediate difficulty, making it suitable for knitters with some experience who are ready to tackle decorative techniques like brioche knitting and slipped stitch patterning.
