May Day Baskets - Knit Decorations by Hannah Miller
Project Overview
May Day Baskets are charming knit decorations designed by Hannah Miller of Windblown Fibers. These small baskets are traditionally filled with treats or flowers and left anonymously on the doorsteps of friends and neighbors as part of the May Day celebration custom. The recipient discovers the gift after the giver rings the doorbell and runs away, making these knit baskets perfect for spreading joy and maintaining a cherished holiday tradition.
Craft and Technique
This is an advanced knitting project that requires solid foundational skills and experience with more complex construction methods. The baskets are created using knitting techniques appropriate for small, three-dimensional decorative objects. Crafters working on this project should be comfortable reading advanced patterns and executing techniques that transform flat knitted fabric into structured basket forms.
Stitches and Construction
While specific stitch details are referenced in the pattern, the construction involves knitting methods suitable for creating small decorative vessels. The advanced difficulty level indicates the use of techniques such as shaping, increases, decreases, and potentially specialized methods for forming the basket structure and creating defined edges or openings.
