Product Description
A combination of moss and stockinette stitches creates this textured series of diamonds. The reverse stockinette side of the scarf is equally presentable.
The pattern is written with a single stitch worked in moss stitch on each edge. Additional border stitches may be cast on for a wider scarf, as was done for the blue model. Both written instructions and charts are provided for the 6" (15 cm) scarf.
A modified, extra wide version of the Mawer Scarf is included as charts only (pages 8-11). A section of the wider scarf is shown in the 5th photo on this screen. Finished Dimensions: 12 inches (30.48 cm) x 59 inches (150 cm) worked on US 8 (5.0mm) needles Aran weight or heavy worsted weight yarn, approximately 500 yards (457.2meters)

Mawer Scarf by Margaret Kendall
What is Being Made
The Mawer Scarf is a knitted accessory designed by Margaret Kendall as an intermediate-level project. This downloadable knitting pattern produces a finished scarf measuring 6 inches (15.25 cm) wide by 59 inches (150 cm) long, making it a classic neck scarf suitable for everyday wear.
Knitting Techniques Used
This pattern employs both written and charted instruction formats to guide knitters through the construction. The design is organized into three distinct sections, with Rows 1–14 and Rows 37–48 repeating identically across each section, creating a cohesive pattern repeat. Knitters work from charted instructions by reading right-side (odd-numbered) rows from right to left and wrong-side (even-numbered) rows from left to right, with charts beginning at Row 1 at the bottom. The pattern recommends placing a stitch marker before the 14th stitch to mark the scarf's center, assisting with pattern tracking throughout the project.
Stitches Used
- Moss Stitch: Used as a single-stitch edge border on each side of the scarf throughout the entire length, providing a neat, finished selvage
- Knit and Purl Stitches: The main pattern combines knit and purl stitches as presented in the charted instructions, where knit stitches are worked as knits and purl stitches are worked as purls
Materials and Yarn Specifications
The Mawer Scarf is designed to be worked with Aran weight or heavy worsted weight yarn. The pattern requires approximately 250–275 yards (228–251 meters) of yarn for the standard finished dimensions. Knitters wishing to create a wider scarf may cast on additional stitches in multiples of 4, beyond the base 27 stitches, and work these extra stitches in Moss Stitch; however, additional yardage will be required for wider variations.
Pattern Structure and Customization
The pattern is structured with clear guidance for both written and charted formats, allowing knitters to choose their preferred instruction method. The repeating section structure makes the pattern manageable for intermediate knitters, and the option to adjust width by adding edge stitches in Moss Stitch provides flexibility for personalizing the finished scarf to individual preferences.
