Product Description

Marushka is a Russian Fairy Tale about a girl sent out in the middle of winter, through the deep snow to fetch violets, strawberries and apples for her wicked step-sister. With the help of the twelve kings ruling over the months she succeeds. When the step-sister tries to force the kings to give her more apples, King December buries her in snow.

This triangular shawl is knit in a pale green colour called Silver Pine that reminds me of frozen pine trees in the deep of winter. The central motif on the shawl shows Marushka’s wispy tracks through the snow, as she’s trudging back and forth between her evil stepsister and the twelve kings. The edging around the shawl alternates between the spring flowers/violets that Marushka was asked to bring, and clusters of wild strawberries. The strawberries are also clustered in such a way that from a distance the clusters look like ripe apples.

The complete fairy tale can be read here.

Marushka Lace Shawl by Anna Dalvi

Design Inspiration and Overview

Marushka is an advanced lace knitting shawl inspired by the Russian fairy tale of a girl who, with the help of the twelve kings ruling over the months, succeeds in gathering violets, strawberries, and apples through the deep winter snow. This narrative inspiration translates into an elegant triangular shawl design that showcases intricate lace patterning throughout.

What Is Being Made

The Marushka is a large triangular lace shawl designed to be worn as a wrap or decorative accessory. The finished blocked dimensions are impressive: a wingspan of 230 cm (91 inches) and a height of 54 cm (21 inches), making it a substantial garment suitable for layering or draping elegantly over the shoulders.

Knitting Techniques and Construction

This shawl is constructed using top-down triangular shawl construction, a popular method in advanced lace knitting. The pattern begins with a minimal cast-on of just 2 stitches, which are then increased through strategic yarn overs and decreases to create the expanding triangular shape. The construction relies entirely on charted instructions, with all rows presented in chart form rather than written-out directions.

The pattern employs standard chart reading conventions: right-side (odd-numbered) rows are read from right to left, while wrong-side (even-numbered) rows are read from left to right. This charted approach allows for precise placement of lace motifs and decorative elements throughout the shawl's expansion.

Stitches and Lace Patterning

The Marushka utilizes fundamental lace knitting stitches to create its delicate openwork design. Key techniques include:

  • Yarn overs (yo): Create the characteristic holes and decorative eyelets that define lace knitting
  • Knit front and back (kfb): Used in the setup rows to establish the initial increases from the 2-stitch cast-on
  • Knit stitches (k): Form the structural foundation and solid areas between lace motifs
  • Decreases: Paired with yarn overs to maintain stitch count while creating directional lace patterns

The lace patterning is presented through detailed charts that guide the placement of these stitches across each row, allowing the knitter to create the intricate openwork design characteristic of advanced lace shawls.

Materials and Yarn Specifications

The Marushka pattern calls for luxury yarn materials that enhance the delicate nature of the lace design. The recommended yarn is Nimbus Lace from Slackford Studio, a lace-weight yarn composed of 70% baby alpaca, 20% silk, and 10% cashmere. This fiber blend provides exceptional softness, drape, and a subtle sheen that showcases lace work beautifully.

The pattern requires 2 skeins of Nimbus Lace, providing 650 yards (600 meters) per 50-gram skein, for a total yardage of approximately 1,300 yards (1,200 meters). The yarn is worked on 3.0 mm (US 2½) needles, which is typical for lace-weight yarns and allows for the creation of delicate, refined stitches. A tapestry needle is also required for weaving in yarn ends and finishing.

While Nimbus Lace from Slackford Studio is the specified yarn, the pattern notes that similar lace-weight yarns with comparable yardage and fiber content may be substituted, allowing knitters flexibility in yarn selection while maintaining the intended finished dimensions and drape.

Difficulty Level

Marushka is classified as an advanced knitting pattern, appropriate for experienced knitters with solid foundational skills. The advanced difficulty reflects the requirement to read and work from detailed lace charts, manage numerous yarn overs and decreases across multiple rows, and maintain consistent tension throughout the large triangular construction. Knitters should be comfortable with lace knitting techniques and chart interpretation before undertaking this project.
