Product Description

Looking for a simple and satisfying knit? This scarf combines a single 100g skein of fingering weight yarn with a similar yardage of lace weight yarn to make a cozy reversible garter stitch scarf with a scalloped edge. It's easy to adjust to the amount of yarn you have on hand. Pair a treasured set of skeins of fingering and lace weight to come up with something completely special.

This scarf starts with a few stitches at one end, gradually increasing with a memorizable pattern repeat. At the half way point, the decreases begin and the scarf shrinks down to the original number of stitches.

Pink sample: a gorgeous multicolored skein of sock yarn from Ravenswood Fibre Co. (Orchard Bounty) and a fluffy mostly-pink mohair blend lace weight yarn, both souvenirs.

Green sample: a skein of Hand Maiden Lace Silk yarn in fall colors paired with a skein of green Wollmeise sock yarn

Purple sample: odds and ends paired with a couple of skeins of Rowan Kidsilk Night - grey, with a flash of silver

Marled Scallops Scarf by Natalie Servant

What Is Being Made

The Marled Scallops Scarf is a gently scalloped knit scarf designed by Natalie Servant that showcases a unique marled effect created by knitting two different weight yarns together simultaneously. This technique produces a one-of-a-kind fabric with visual depth and texture. The finished scarf measures 76 inches in length with a depth that gradually increases from 1 inch to 8.5 inches, creating an elegant tapered shape.

Knitting Techniques Used

The primary technique employed in this pattern is marling, which involves holding and knitting two yarns together as one strand throughout the project. This method creates a blended, textured appearance by combining contrasting yarn weights and fiber types. The scalloped edges are achieved through strategic shaping that gradually increases the depth of the scarf, resulting in a graceful curved silhouette rather than straight edges.

Stitches and Stitch Patterns

The Marled Scallops Scarf is worked primarily in garter stitch, which is the fundamental knit stitch pattern used throughout the design. Garter stitch creates a dense, textured fabric with horizontal ridges and is ideal for beginners as it requires only knit stitches on every row. The gauge for this pattern is 17 stitches and 36 rows over 4 inches when worked in garter stitch.

Materials and Yarn Specifications

This pattern requires a total of 400 yards or more in each of two different yarns, combining a fingering weight yarn with a lace weight yarn. The designer provides three color sample variations:

  • Pink Sample: Ravenswood Fiber Co. Sock (100% merino, 280 yards per 100g skein) in Orchard Bounty paired with an unknown pink laceweight mohair
  • Green Sample: Rohrspatz & Wollmeise Pure 100% Merino Superwash in Schwefel (575 yards per 150g skein) combined with Handmaiden Fine Yarn Lace Silk (100% silk, 984 yards per 100g skein)
  • Purple Sample: Approximately 100 grams of fingering weight odds and ends with 2 skeins of Rowan Kidsilk Night (227 yards per 25g skein) in Gray

Needles and Tools

The pattern calls for US 5 (3.75mm) double pointed needles or the size needed to achieve proper gauge. A darning needle is required for finishing and weaving in yarn ends.

Skill Level

This scarf is rated as a beginner level project, making it accessible to knitters new to the craft. The straightforward garter stitch construction and the creative marling technique provide an excellent introduction to combining yarns while building fundamental knitting skills.

Pattern Format

The Marled Scallops Scarf pattern is available as a downloadable PDF, allowing crafters to access the complete instructions digitally and work at their own pace.
