Product Description
Margarita is an easy, toss-on cardigan for summer. Bold lace on the back is echoed in the lace detail that finishes the ribbed collar. A casual length and short sleeves make this perfect over a sundress or shorts. The fit is open, with narrow front panels meant to showcase what's underneath, but directions are included to make the fit more traditional if you prefer a more closed silhouette. Choose the size that gives you about 2” of negative ease, based on bust size, for the fit shown. Sizing is given for actual finished garment measurements. Modified shaping options allow you to add 4, 4.5, or 6” to this measurement. Revise yarn quantities if you use modified shaping. The yarn I used is a lovely wool and cotton mix from O-Wool in Peridot. It hits that delicate balance of light, soft, warm and just a touch rustic, making Margarita feminine, but not too girly. Alternatives yarns are suggested but always check your gauge.
Margarita Cardigan by BabyCocktails
Garment Overview
Margarita is a lightweight, open-front cardigan designed by Thea Colman of BabyCocktails as an ideal layering piece for warm weather. This knit cardigan features a casual, relaxed silhouette with a cropped length and short sleeves, making it perfect for wearing over sundresses or shorts. The design emphasizes an open fit with narrow front panels specifically intended to showcase lace tees or summer dresses underneath, though the pattern includes modifications to create a more traditional, closed silhouette for those preferring additional coverage.
Design Details
The Margarita cardigan showcases bold lace patterning on the back as its signature design element. This striking lace motif is echoed in refined lace detailing that finishes the ribbed collar, creating visual continuity throughout the garment. The combination of lace and ribbed elements provides both decorative interest and functional structure, while the open front panels allow the lace details to take center stage without overwhelming the design.
Knitting Techniques and Stitches
- Lace knitting: The primary decorative technique used for both the back panel and collar detailing, creating an open, airy aesthetic appropriate for summer wear
- Ribbing: Used for the collar construction to provide structure and elasticity
- Seamless construction: The pattern utilizes circular needles and magic loop techniques, allowing for in-the-round knitting to minimize seaming
Yarn and Materials
The Margarita cardigan is designed to be knitted with O-Wool Balance, a blend of 50% organic wool and 50% organic cotton. This fiber combination creates a fabric that is light and soft while maintaining warmth and subtle texture. The yarn is available in the colorway Peridot. Yardage requirements range from 600 to 1,200 yards depending on size, with each skein containing 130 yards.
Needles and Notions
- Needles: US #7 (4.5mm) needles in the following configurations: long circular needles for the main cardigan body and collar, and double-pointed needles or magic loop method for sleeve construction
- Notions: Stitch markers for tracking pattern repeats, a darning needle for weaving in ends, and waste yarn or stitch holders for securing stitches during construction
Skill Level
This pattern is rated as intermediate difficulty, making it suitable for knitters with foundational skills who are comfortable working with lace patterns and seamless construction techniques.
