Product Description
Marelle is an asymmetrical triangular shawl, knitted top-down on the bias.
It has an interesting colorplay, created using different techniques. The “big” color changes are worked in the intarsia technique, the “small” color changes are worked stranded. If you’re not familiar with these techniques - don’t worry, they’re not difficult at all! There is an explanation of both of them in the pattern.
This shawl is designed for men, too! Just have a look at the project list, there are some great color combinations there.
Yardage requirements are 3 balls of Knit Picks Palette in color A (grey on the sample) and 1.5 balls of Knit Picks Palette in color B (violet on the sample). A substitute yarn is shown below.
Marelle Asymmetrical Triangular Shawl by Melanie Berg
What is Being Made
Marelle is an asymmetrical triangular shawl designed by Melanie Berg. This striking top-down knit features geometric colorplay that creates an eye-catching visual effect. The finished shawl measures 65 inches (165 cm) along the top edge wingspan and 28 inches (70 cm) long at the center, making it a substantial accessory suitable for layering or draping.
Construction and Shaping Techniques
The shawl is knit top-down on the bias, a construction method that allows for intuitive shaping and the ability to try on the garment as you work. Shaping is accomplished through strategic increases worked along the upper edge, which creates the asymmetrical triangular silhouette. This top-down approach gives knitters control over the final dimensions and makes it easy to adjust the size if desired.
Stitches and Stitch Techniques
The pattern employs fundamental knitting stitches and increases/decreases to achieve its geometric design:
- Knit stitch (k) - the primary stitch forming the fabric base
- Knit into front and back (kfb) - an increase technique that creates one additional stitch, used strategically for shaping
- Knit two together (k2tog) - a decrease technique that reduces stitches
- Slip stitch purlwise (sl) - used for edge finishing and stitch manipulation
- Garter stitch - the primary fabric texture, created by knitting every row, which produces horizontal ridges and provides excellent drape and stability
Yarn and Materials
The pattern calls for Knit Picks Palette, a 100% wool yarn in the 4-ply weight category. The yarn is specified in two colors: 3 balls of Gosling (color A) and 1.5 balls of Mulberry (color B), totaling approximately 4.5 balls. With each ball containing 50 grams and 231 yards (211 meters), this project uses approximately 1,039 yards of yarn total. Knit Picks Palette is noted for its cozy qualities and extensive color range, allowing knitters flexibility in color selection while maintaining consistent fiber and yardage specifications.
Needles and Gauge
The pattern is worked on US 4 (3.5 mm) circular needles measuring 40 inches (100 cm) in length, or a size appropriate to obtain the specified gauge. The required gauge is 12 stitches and 11 rows measured over 2 inches by 2 inches (5 cm by 5 cm) in garter stitch. Achieving proper gauge is essential for obtaining the finished measurements and ensuring the shawl drapes as designed.
Difficulty Level
Marelle is rated as an intermediate-level knitting project. While the construction method is straightforward and the stitch vocabulary is basic, the top-down bias construction and the need to maintain consistent gauge and shaping make it suitable for knitters with some experience beyond the absolute beginner level.
