Product Description
*The name Marakoopa comes from one of my favourite places in Tasmania – Mole Creek. Each time I have been there, twice with my Mum as a kid and then in my late 20s with my husband, we camped by a picturesque babbling creek, searched for platypus and visited the caves. One of the caves is named Marakoopa which means ‘handsome’ in the Aboriginal language from that area.
This sweater is knit using a scrumptious yarn from Tasmania, White Gum Wool, and uses short-rows to shape both the back neck and bottom hem. Knit top-down starting with the neck band, with slight waist shaping and using two contrasting colours, this sweater has vertically no finishing and will easily become a wardrobe staple

What is Being Made
Marakoopa is a top-down knitted sweater designed by Kiri FitzGerald, named after the Marakoopa Cave in Mole Creek, Tasmania—a name meaning "handsome" in the local Aboriginal language. This garment is crafted as a wardrobe staple piece featuring subtle waist shaping and a refined silhouette that requires virtually no finishing work once complete.
Knitting Techniques
The Marakoopa sweater employs several key construction techniques to achieve its elegant fit and minimal finishing requirements:
- Top-down construction: The sweater is knitted from the neck downward, beginning with the neck band and progressing toward the body and hem
- Short-row shaping: Strategic short-rows are used to shape both the back neck and bottom hem, creating a tailored fit without requiring seaming
- Waist shaping: Subtle shaping at the waist provides a fitted silhouette while maintaining comfort and wearability
- Two-colour design: The pattern incorporates two contrasting colours throughout the sweater for visual interest
Stitches and Stitch Patterns
While specific stitch abbreviations are not detailed in the pattern overview, the Marakoopa utilizes fundamental knitting stitches appropriate for a beginner-level project. The construction method—top-down with short-row shaping—suggests the use of stockinette stitch as the primary fabric, combined with ribbing for the neck band and hem to provide structure and elasticity.
Yarn and Materials
The Marakoopa is knitted using White Gum Wool, a premium yarn sourced from Tasmania. This yarn is a DK weight (8ply) superfine merino consisting of 100% superfine merino fiber. Each ball contains 100 grams and approximately 236 metres (258 yards) of yardage. The pattern requires 3 to 5 balls depending on the size being knitted.
Needles and notions include 4.5mm (US 7) circular knitting needles in both 40cm and 80cm lengths, as well as double-pointed needles for working the neck band and other small circumference sections. The use of circular needles throughout the construction supports the seamless, top-down approach and eliminates the need for traditional finishing techniques.
Difficulty Level
Marakoopa is rated as a beginner-friendly knitting project, making it an excellent choice for knitters developing their skills. The straightforward top-down construction, combined with fundamental techniques and DK-weight yarn that is forgiving to work with, allows newer knitters to successfully complete a polished, professional-looking garment.
