We were picnicking on a crisp September day in Vermont, and a gorgeous maple leaf drifted onto our picnic blanket. The vibrant colors inspired this hat. This pattern could be used to highlight any beautiful handpainted or variegated yarn. If you use a fingering yarn (I used about 120yds of handpainted Trekking XXL) for the leaves, you'll need to use two strands held together. This hat has a lined ear band for warmth. The lining can be done in a coordinating color, using about 100 yds of either non-itchy acrylic (my kids would never wear wool on their foreheads), or you can use the same wool as the body of the hat. The hat has two knitted-in twined herringbone braids. There is a chart for the leaf design.

Maple Leaves Hat by Cheryl Andrews

Project Overview

The Maple Leaves Hat is an intermediate-level knitting pattern designed to celebrate the natural beauty of autumn foliage. Inspired by a vibrant maple leaf that drifted onto a picnic blanket during a crisp September day in Vermont, this hat showcases how handpainted or variegated yarns can be highlighted through thoughtful pattern design. The pattern offers three adult sizes and features a practical lining over the ears for enhanced warmth during cooler seasons.

What Is Being Made

This is an adult knit hat available in three sizes (small, medium, and larger). The design incorporates a decorative lining that extends over the ears, providing both functional insulation and a finished interior appearance. The hat is constructed to showcase beautiful yarn colorwork and is particularly suited for displaying the natural variations found in handpainted or variegated yarn selections.

Knitting Techniques and Stitches

The Maple Leaves Hat employs classic knitting techniques appropriate for intermediate crafters. The pattern utilizes circular knitting on both circular needles and double-pointed needles, allowing for seamless construction in the round. This method is ideal for hat construction as it eliminates the need for seaming. The pattern incorporates colorwork elements, using a main color (MC) and contrast color (CC) to create the maple leaf motif. The contrast color work may involve stranded knitting or intarsia techniques to achieve the detailed leaf design.

Materials and Yarn Requirements

Main Color Yarn: Worsted weight yarn, approximately one skein of 4 ounces and 190 yards. The sample was knitted in Brown Sheep Lamb's Pride worsted weight in the colorway Oatmeal, which is composed of 85% wool and 15% mohair, providing warmth and a subtle sheen.

Lining Yarn: Worsted weight acrylic in a coordinating color, approximately 2 ounces. This is an excellent opportunity to utilize yarn from your existing stash, making the project economical and sustainable.

Contrast Color Yarn: Sock weight or worsted weight yarn, approximately 1 ounce. When using sock weight, two strands are worked together to achieve the desired gauge and visual impact. The sample utilized Trekking Hand Art sock weight in the colorway Jamaika, containing 75% superwash wool and 25% nylon for durability and easy care.

Needles and Gauge

Needles Required: Size 6 circular needle measuring 16 inches, and a set of four size 6 double-pointed needles. This needle combination allows for smooth transitions from circular knitting to double-pointed needles as the crown decreases narrow the circumference.

Gauge: 19 stitches by 24 rows equals 4 inches in stockinette stitch. Achieving the correct gauge is essential for proper fit across all three adult sizes and ensures the maple leaf motif displays at the intended scale.

Yarn Weight and Difficulty Level

This pattern is designed for aran weight yarns, which refers to the worsted weight category used throughout the project. The intermediate difficulty level makes this hat suitable for knitters who have mastered basic techniques such as casting on, knit and purl stitches, and simple increases and decreases, and are ready to explore colorwork and circular knitting construction.
