Product Description
The name of this sweater is a play on fair-isle and “Many-Colored Land”. I wanted to design a cardigan that used several fair-isle motifs in a different way. I juxtaposed the herringbone with the seventies flower motif on the front, the gingham with the leopard, and on the back something different as well!
This takes some knitting and concentration, but the end result will be fabulous. A classic keeper cardigan to be proud of!
It’s knit in the round, bottom-up, with steeks for front, armholes, neck and sleeve caps. The fronts have picked-up stitches to create a sturdy double buttonband.
The Colourmart yarns are held together for each color. The alternative regular laceweight yarn is held single.

What Is Being Made
The Many Fair Isles Cardigan is an advanced-level knitted cardigan featuring Fair Isle colorwork patterning throughout. This garment is designed as a sophisticated layering piece available in five sizes ranging from XS to XL, with finished bust circumferences from 16 to 24 inches when laid flat and closed. The cardigan is constructed using a bottom-up, in-the-round knitting method, making it an excellent project for experienced knitters seeking to develop their technical skills.
Construction Techniques
This cardigan employs several advanced knitting techniques that distinguish it as a project for experienced crafters. The garment is knit in the round from the bottom up, which creates seamless fabric and allows for continuous Fair Isle colorwork integration. Steeks are used strategically at the front opening, armholes, neck, and sleeve caps to create clean openings while maintaining the integrity of the circular knitting method. This technique requires cutting the knitted fabric after completion, which is then secured with reinforcement stitching.
The front closure features a double buttonband created with picked-up stitches, providing a sturdy, professional finish that prevents stretching and distortion at the button placement points. The hem and sleeve hems are folded and knitted down to create a neat, finished edge. An alternative edging option using garter stripe edging with 2 rows of main color alternating with 2 rows of contrast color is provided for knitters preferring a different aesthetic.
Stitches and Stitch Patterns
The primary stitch structure relies on stockinette stitch as the foundation for Fair Isle colorwork. Fair Isle knitting involves working with two colors per row, creating intricate geometric and traditional patterns by carrying the unused color across the back of the work. This technique requires careful tension management to ensure the floats (stranded yarn) remain elastic and the fabric maintains consistent gauge. The picked-up stitches for the buttonbands and the garter stripe alternative edging introduce textural variation to the finished garment.
Materials and Yarn Specifications
The Many Fair Isles Cardigan is designed to be knitted in lace-weight yarn, specifically Colourmart Cashmere 4-ply or doubled Colourmart laceweight. The pattern calls for two colors: a main color (MC) and a contrast color (CC). Yardage requirements are substantial due to the lace weight and Fair Isle technique, ranging from 700 yards each of main and contrast color for the XS size up to 1,100 yards each for the XL size. The sample garment shown was knitted in peach (MC) and grey (CC), demonstrating the sophisticated color combination possibilities available to knitters.
The use of lace-weight yarn creates a delicate, refined drape suitable for layering, while the cashmere fiber provides softness and luxury. Knitters will require appropriate needles sized for lace-weight yarn to achieve the correct gauge, and the Fair Isle technique demands careful attention to tension management across color changes to prevent puckering or loose floats.
Difficulty Level
This pattern is designated as advanced difficulty, making it appropriate for experienced knitters with solid foundational skills. The combination of in-the-round knitting, Fair Isle colorwork, steeking, and picked-up stitches requires proficiency in multiple advanced techniques. Knitters should be comfortable managing multiple colors, maintaining consistent gauge during colorwork, executing steeks with confidence, and troubleshooting tension issues that may arise with lace-weight yarn.
