Manchester Reversible Hat by Pattern Paradise

What is Being Made

The Manchester Reversible Hat is a versatile crochet hat designed to be worn with either side facing outward, offering two distinct looks from a single project. This downloadable PDF pattern from Pattern Paradise provides instructions for creating a reversible hat suitable for toddlers through adults, with detailed sizing options to accommodate different head measurements.

Sizes and Measurements

The pattern includes four size options: Toddler, Child, Adult Small, and Adult Large. A comprehensive sizing chart is provided within the pattern to help crafters select the appropriate size based on head measurements. Size variations are clearly marked throughout the instructions in parentheses following this format: (Toddler, Child, Adult Small, Adult Large).

Crochet Techniques Used

This beginner-friendly crochet pattern employs several fundamental and intermediate techniques to create its distinctive reversible structure. The primary stitch pattern used is herringbone half double crochet (Hhdc), which creates a textured, visually interesting fabric that looks appealing from both sides—essential for a reversible design. The pattern also incorporates half double crochet decreases (Hhdc2tog) for shaping, allowing the hat to conform properly to different head sizes. A slip stitch band is used to create a finished edge, providing structure and a polished appearance.

Stitches and Abbreviations

The Manchester Reversible Hat uses the following crochet stitches and techniques:

  • Hhdc (Herringbone Half Double Crochet): The foundation stitch of this pattern. Worked by yarning over, inserting the hook into the next stitch, pulling up a loop to create three loops on the hook, then pulling the first loop straight through the second loop (similar to a slip stitch), and finally yarning over and pulling through the remaining two loops on the hook.
  • Hhdc2tog (Herringbone Half Double Crochet 2 Together): A decrease stitch used for shaping. Worked by repeating the yarn over and loop insertion twice to accumulate four loops on the hook, then pulling the first loop through the second and third loops, followed by a yarn over and pulling through the remaining loops.
  • Hdc (Half Double Crochet): A standard crochet stitch used in sections of the pattern.
  • Sc (Single Crochet): A basic crochet stitch incorporated into the pattern.
  • Ch (Chain): The foundation stitch used to begin the project.
  • Sl St (Slip Stitch): Used for joining rounds and creating the finished band edge.
  • BLO (Back Loop Only): A technique where the hook is inserted only into the back loop of a stitch, creating a distinctive ridge effect.

Materials and Yarn Requirements

The Manchester Reversible Hat is designed to be a quick, efficient project requiring minimal materials. The pattern calls for bulky weight yarn (weight category #5), specifically one ball of yarn per hat. The designer used Red Heart Italian Story Vera in the color Caffee for the sample, with each ball containing 135 yards of yarn—sufficient yardage to complete any of the four size options.

Additional materials needed include a US L/8.00mm crochet hook and a tapestry needle for weaving in ends and finishing.

Gauge Information

Proper gauge is essential for achieving the correct finished size. The pattern specifies two gauge measurements:

  • Body Gauge: 11 herringbone half double crochet stitches by 8 rows in pattern equals 4 inches
  • Band Gauge: 7 slip stitches by 8.5 rows equals 2 inches

Crafters are encouraged to work a gauge swatch before beginning the project to ensure their tension matches these specifications, which will guarantee the hat fits properly across all size options.

Difficulty Level

This pattern is rated as beginner-friendly, making it an excellent choice for newer crocheters looking to expand their skills. While the herringbone half double crochet stitch may be unfamiliar to absolute beginners, the pattern provides clear written instructions for executing this stitch. The straightforward construction and use of standard crochet abbreviations make it accessible to crafters with basic crochet knowledge.
