Maleme Beanie by Meiju Kallio
What is Being Made
The Maleme Beanie is a cabled knit hat designed by independent designer Meiju Kallio. This intermediate-level knitting project features delicate cables as its primary design element. The beanie is available in three sizes to fit head circumferences of approximately 21 inches (54-56 cm), 22 inches (56-58 cm), and 24 inches (60-62 cm). All sizes are knitted with the same stitch count, with sizing adjustments achieved through gauge selection, allowing knitters to customize the finished measurements based on their preferred yarn weight and needle size.
Knitting Techniques Used
The Maleme Beanie employs several fundamental knitting techniques to create its structured cable design and proper fit:
- Cable knitting: The beanie's signature delicate cables form the primary visual element and require working stitches out of sequence to create twisted, rope-like textures
- Increases: Make one right purlwise (m1R) increases are used to shape the hat, creating a right-slanting increase on the right side of the work by lifting the strand between stitches from the back and purling through the front loop
- Decreases: Multiple decrease methods are employed including knit two together (k2tog) and purl two together (p2tog) for standard decreases, as well as slip, slip, knit (ssk) decreases that create a left-slanting decrease by slipping two stitches individually as if to knit and then knitting them together through the back loop
- Gauge-based sizing: The pattern utilizes gauge as the primary sizing tool, allowing knitters to achieve different finished circumferences by selecting appropriate yarn weights and needle sizes while maintaining the same stitch count
Stitches Used
The Maleme Beanie utilizes a focused selection of essential knitting stitches:
- Knit stitch (k): The foundational stitch that creates the base fabric
- Purl stitch (p): Used in combination with knit stitches to create textured surfaces and cable patterns
- Cable stitches: Created by crossing groups of stitches over one another to produce the delicate cable texture that defines this design
- Increase stitches: Make one right purlwise (m1R) for shaping
- Decrease stitches: Knit two together (k2tog), purl two together (p2tog), and slip, slip, knit (ssk) for decreasing stitches and shaping the crown
Materials and Yarn Specifications
The Maleme Beanie pattern is designed to work with three different yarn weights, providing flexibility for knitters with varying yarn stash and preferences:
- DK weight yarn: A lighter yarn option that will produce a more delicate finished beanie
- Sport weight yarn: A mid-range yarn weight offering a balance between drape and structure
- Worsted weight yarn: A heavier yarn option that creates a warmer, more substantial finished garment
The pattern requires appropriate needles matched to the selected yarn weight to achieve the correct gauge. Knitters should refer to standard yarn weight guidelines to select needle sizes that will produce the gauge specified in the pattern. The specific needle size will vary depending on whether DK, sport, or worsted weight yarn is chosen, as each yarn weight requires different needle sizes to achieve proper fabric density and the finished measurements indicated in the pattern.
