Product Description

A Christmas stocking for all on your list!

I designed the original for my god-son's very first Christmas. Knit toe-up, with a short-row garter stitch heel, I added bits of charted color-work to keep it interesting. Two additional designs (diagonal striping or holly leaves) are included in case you don’t want to personalize this classic holiday decoration. A lining hides the carries from the color-work and finishes this heirloom to perfection. The sample is knit with a DK cotton-linen blend.

Hang one near your chimney and see what Santa thinks.

What Is Being Made

Malcolm's Christmas Stocking is a knitted Christmas stocking decoration designed by Mary C. Gildersleeve. This heirloom-quality holiday piece features a generous foot measuring approximately 10-1/2 inches with a 15-inch leg and 8-inch diameter, making it a substantial and eye-catching decoration suitable for displaying near a fireplace or mantelpiece. The stocking is constructed using a toe-up knitting method, ensuring a seamless finish from the ground up.

Knitting Techniques

This advanced-level knitting project incorporates multiple sophisticated techniques to create visual interest and structural integrity. The stocking features a short-row garter stitch heel, a technique that creates a reinforced, durable heel section while maintaining the classic garter stitch texture. The design includes charted colorwork elements that add personalization and decorative appeal to the leg of the stocking. To achieve a professional finish, the pattern includes instructions for adding a fabric lining that conceals the yarn carries from the colorwork, elevating the finished piece to heirloom quality.

The pattern provides flexibility with three distinct design options: the original personalized colorwork design, a diagonal striping pattern, and a holly leaves charted design. This variety allows knitters to choose the aesthetic that best suits their holiday décor preferences.

Stitches and Construction

The primary stitch used throughout most of the stocking is stockinette stitch, which creates the smooth, classic appearance expected in a refined Christmas stocking. The heel section employs garter stitch, a textured stitch that provides durability and structure in this high-wear area. The colorwork sections utilize charted color patterns, allowing knitters to follow a visual guide for introducing contrasting colors into the design.

Materials and Gauge

This project is designed for DK weight yarn, a medium-weight yarn that provides excellent stitch definition for both the stockinette sections and the charted colorwork. The sample stocking was knit using a DK cotton-linen blend, specifically KnitPicks Cot-Lin in four coordinating colors: Moroccan Red (main color), Swan, Nightfall, and Sprout. Yarn requirements are 250 yards of the main color and 75 yards each of three contrasting colors.

The pattern calls for US #3 double-pointed needles and 16-inch circular needles to accommodate the various stages of construction, from the toe through the leg. Additional materials include stitch markers for tracking pattern repeats and approximately 1/2 yard of coordinating fabric for the lining.

The recommended gauge is 6 stitches by 7 rounds per 1 inch in stockinette stitch. Achieving the correct gauge is essential for obtaining the finished dimensions and ensuring the stocking hangs properly when filled.

Pattern Details

This downloadable PDF pattern was originally published in 2014 and revised in October 2016, reflecting refinements based on knitter feedback. The complete pattern spans six pages and includes all necessary instructions, charts, and finishing guidance. As an advanced-level project, this stocking is best suited for experienced knitters comfortable with toe-up construction, short-row shaping, and charted colorwork techniques.
