Product Description
This shawl consists of two parts: the main part and the border. The main part is worked in segments (you will need 25), and then the border in joined seamlessly to it with a simple trick. There's no need to break or join yarn. And just one color is used in any row.
Techniquie-wise, it is mostly short rows and mosaic knitting. Not too difficult, but not for the novice knitter.
Malachite Shawl by Kulabra Designs
Project Overview
Malachite is a knitted shawl design by Natalia Moreva, created in June 2021 and published by Kulabra Designs. This intermediate-level knitting project features a distinctive construction method that allows crafters to work with a manageable stitch count while creating an impressive finished garment. The shawl showcases a unique circular motif design inspired by the natural patterns of malachite stone.
What Is Being Made
The Malachite shawl is a large triangular or crescent-shaped wrap that provides substantial coverage and warmth. When blocked to finished dimensions, the shawl measures 170 centimeters across the wingspan with a depth of 70 centimeters, making it a generous garment suitable for layering or wearing as a statement piece. The shawl features circular motifs that measure approximately 5.5 centimeters across after blocking, creating visual interest and texture throughout the design.
Construction and Techniques
The Malachite shawl is worked in two separate parts, allowing the knitter to break the project into manageable sections. This two-part construction method is specifically designed to keep the stitch count relatively small and workable on circular needles, making the project more accessible despite its large finished size. The circular motifs are intentionally slightly bumpy when fresh off the needles and require proper blocking to achieve their final flat, round appearance. The designer emphasizes the importance of knitting the circles with a loose tension to ensure they block properly, as stiff fabric will not achieve the desired flat, circular shape.
Stitches and Stitch Patterns
The primary stitch used throughout the Malachite shawl is garter stitch, a fundamental knitting technique created by knitting every row. Garter stitch produces a textured, reversible fabric with horizontal ridges and is known for its stability and drape. The gauge for this project is 22 stitches and 28 rows per 10 centimeters in garter stitch, which helps determine the final size and drape of the finished shawl.
Yarn and Materials
The Malachite shawl requires two contrasting yarn colors to achieve its striking visual effect:
- Main Color (MC): 800 meters of fingering- or sport-weight yarn in a light color (shown as light green in the original design)
- Contrast Color (CC): 600 meters of fingering- or sport-weight yarn in a darker shade (shown as dark green), which can be either a solid color or a gradient yarn such as Zauberball Crazy (400 meters per 100 grams)
The designer recommends using highly contrasting colors between the main and contrast colors to maximize the visual impact of the circular motifs. Gradient yarns are acceptable for the contrast color, but solid yarn is preferred for the main color. Yarns with very rapid color changes are not recommended, as they may obscure the intentional color blocking and circular pattern design.
Needles and Tools
The Malachite shawl is worked on 4.0 or 4.5 millimeter circular needles. The choice between these needle sizes will affect the final gauge and drape of the finished shawl. Circular needles are essential for this project, as they accommodate the large number of stitches needed to create the wingspan and allow for the two-part construction method. Proper blocking equipment and a blocking surface are necessary to achieve the flat, circular appearance of the motifs after knitting is complete.
Finished Dimensions and Blocking
The Malachite shawl grows significantly during the blocking process. Before blocking, the circles appear slightly bumpy and the overall shawl dimensions are smaller. After blocking and wet finishing, the shawl expands approximately 10 centimeters in all directions, reaching its final dimensions of 170 centimeters wingspan and 70 centimeters depth. This growth during blocking is normal and expected, and proper blocking technique is essential to achieve the designer's intended finished appearance and drape.
Difficulty Level
Rated as an intermediate knitting project, the Malachite shawl requires competence with basic knitting techniques, circular needle work, and color changes. Knitters should be comfortable reading pattern instructions and managing multiple yarn colors. The two-part construction and emphasis on loose, even tension for proper blocking make this project suitable for knitters with some experience but not necessarily advanced skills.
