Maine Raglan Jacket by Dawn Brocco

What is Being Made

The Maine Raglan Jacket is a one-size cardigan designed for everyday wear. This knitted garment features a classic raglan construction with a front opening, making it an accessible project suitable for multiple body sizes. The design includes practical roomy pockets and is intended as a comfortable, neutral-colored addition to a winter wardrobe. Matching mittens are also included in this pattern.

Design Philosophy and Construction

This pattern prioritizes wearability and ease of construction. The raglan shaping provides a flattering fit that accommodates various sizes without requiring extensive sizing adjustments. The designer emphasizes that textural interest is achieved without complicated knitting techniques, making this an ideal intermediate-level project. The neutral coloring ensures versatility, allowing the finished jacket to coordinate with most outfits.

Knitting Techniques and Stitches

The Maine Raglan Jacket employs raglan sleeve construction, a technique where sleeves are increased gradually from the neckline to the armhole, creating diagonal seam lines from the neck to the underarm. This method is popular for its comfortable fit and relative simplicity.

  • Crochet Finishing: The roomy pockets and front cardigan opening are finished using single crochet and slip stitch techniques, providing a neat, durable edge that prevents curling and adds a polished appearance to these high-wear areas.
  • Yarn Construction: The pattern is designed to showcase textural elements without requiring complex stitch patterns, making it accessible for intermediate knitters.

Materials

The Maine Raglan Jacket is designed to be knitted with Bartlettyarns' Maine wool 3-ply yarn in a chunky weight. This yarn choice creates a quick-knitting garment that provides warmth and comfort, making it ideal for chasing away winter chills or warming a cold office environment. The 3-ply construction of the Maine wool contributes to both durability and the textural qualities of the finished piece.
