Product Description

Level: Intermediate

The pattern starts from I-cord and contains 3 pattern stitch charts. The first one begins with 3 small leaves. The second chart has one big leaf and one small and you can repeat this chart as many times as you want for the length of the scarf. The scarf ends with 3 leaves (the third chart). Though the scarf has pointy edge on the big leaf you don’t have to break the yarn. I came up with an idea of continuous process of knitting. You will need to know how to make slip stitches in crochet to do this. Since the stitch pattern has a lot of increases on the right side, the inner edge of the scarf is curvy. All stitch patterns are charted ( not written).

Magnolia Leaf Scarf by Guzel Eaves

What Is Being Made

The Magnolia Leaf Scarf is a knitted accessory featuring an artistic leaf stitch pattern design. This scarf showcases irregular leaf motifs in varying sizes—alternating between larger and smaller leaves—creating visual interest and dimension. The finished piece has a distinctive curvy inner edge and pointed details on the larger leaves, making it a statement accessory suitable for intermediate-level knitters.

Design and Pattern Structure

Designer Guzel Eaves created this scarf by experimenting with traditional leaf stitch patterns and reimagining them with irregular sizing. The pattern is organized into three distinct stitch charts that guide the knitter through the construction process. The scarf begins with an I-cord foundation, followed by the first chart which establishes three small leaves. The second chart introduces the alternating pattern of one large leaf paired with one small leaf, and this section can be repeated as many times as desired to achieve the desired scarf length. The pattern concludes with the third chart, which mirrors the beginning with three final leaves.

Knitting Techniques and Stitches

This intermediate-level project employs several key knitting techniques. The pattern utilizes leaf stitch as its primary decorative element, which is a classic motif in knitting that creates organic, botanical-inspired shapes. The scarf construction begins with an I-cord, a tubular knitted cord that serves as a neat, finished starting edge. A notable design feature is the use of increases on the right side of the work, which creates the characteristic curvy inner edge of the scarf. To achieve the pointed edges on the larger leaves without breaking the yarn between sections, Guzel Eaves incorporated a continuous knitting process. This technique requires knowledge of slip stitches in crochet, allowing the knitter to seamlessly transition between the leaf motifs while maintaining yarn continuity throughout the project.

Materials and Yarn

The Magnolia Leaf Scarf is designed to be worked in super chunky weight yarn. The pattern calls for 4 skeins of Puffin by Quince & Co, a premium yarn choice that works beautifully with the bold leaf stitch pattern. Super chunky yarn creates quick, satisfying progress and produces a substantial, cozy finished scarf with excellent drape and texture that highlights the dimensional leaf stitches.

Difficulty Level

Rated as intermediate difficulty, this pattern is suitable for knitters who have mastered basic stitches and are ready to work with stitch charts and more complex techniques. The combination of chart reading, increases, and the hybrid crochet-knitting technique for continuous construction makes this an engaging project for developing knitters.
