Product Description

The perfect sweater dress for any girl!

I designed this dress for my daughter who always wants to wear dresses, no matter the weather. With practical sleeves, either full length or three-quarters, and comfortably fitted, your daughter can wear this dress anywhere.

This dress is also a great blank canvas for that colourwork or Watermellish chart you have been wanting to try. Use that lovely semi solid and matching trim you have stashed, or knit it in a solid colour, or how about a gradient! This dress looks gorgeous no matter what you choose.

Options are included for different sleeve and hem treatments - picot hems, icord edging and ribbed sleeves.

Knit with DK weight yarn, or a light worsted, ensure that you have gauge and this dress will be a great fit! The dress allows for approximately 1 inch of ease.

Maggie Knit Dress by Sarah Ronchetti

What Is Being Made

Maggie is a knitted dress designed for children, created by independent designer Sarah Ronchetti. This practical garment serves as a year-round staple piece, available in sizes ranging from 12 months to 12 years old. The dress features a classic silhouette with options for customization in sleeve length, making it versatile for different seasons and preferences.

Construction Method and Techniques

This dress is knit from the top down, a construction technique that allows for easy fitting adjustments and the ability to try on the garment as you work. The pattern incorporates raglan increases, which create diagonal shaping lines that run from the neckline to the underarms. This raglan construction method provides a comfortable, well-fitted silhouette while distributing fabric evenly across the shoulders and body.

The top-down approach combined with raglan shaping is particularly practical for children's garments, as it allows knitters to adjust length and fit throughout the knitting process rather than committing to measurements before beginning.

Sleeve Options

The pattern offers flexibility in sleeve styling. Long sleeves are included as the primary option, making Maggie suitable for year-round wear and providing practical coverage for active children. Additionally, three-quarter sleeve options are provided, offering a lighter alternative for warmer weather while maintaining the dress's versatile aesthetic.

Materials and Yarn Requirements

Maggie is designed to be knitted with DK or light worsted weight yarn, which corresponds to aran weight specifications. Yardage requirements vary by size:

  • 12 months (19 inches / 48.5 cm chest): 475–520 yards
  • 18 months (20 inches / 51 cm chest): 500–550 yards
  • 2 years (21 inches / 53.5 cm chest): 525–575 yards
  • 3 years (22 inches / 56 cm chest): 550–600 yards
  • 4 years (23 inches / 58.5 cm chest): 575–630 yards
  • 5 years (24 inches / 61 cm chest): 600–660 yards
  • 6 years (25 inches / 63.5 cm chest): 625–685 yards
  • 7 years (26 inches / 66 cm chest): 650–710 yards
  • 8 years (27 inches / 68.5 cm chest): 675–740 yards
  • 10 years (28 inches / 71 cm chest): 700–770 yards
  • 12 years (30 inches / 76 cm chest): 750–820 yards

The pattern allows approximately 1 inch of ease, meaning the finished garment will be slightly larger than the child's actual chest measurement for comfortable wear. Sarah Ronchetti recommends selecting the size closest to the child's chest measurement for the best fit.

Needles and Tools

The pattern specifies 4.5mm / US 6 needles as the main needle size for this project. This needle size is appropriate for working with DK and light worsted weight yarns and will produce the correct gauge for proper fit.

Difficulty Level

Maggie is rated as an intermediate knitting project. While the top-down raglan construction is a manageable technique, this rating reflects the need for understanding increases, shaping, and the ability to work from a pattern with some complexity. Knitters should be comfortable with basic increases and have experience reading knitting patterns before attempting this design.
