Madicken Cape Knitting Pattern by MillaMia – A Cosy Women's Cape in Naturally Soft Merino

The Madicken Cape is a beautifully designed women's knitted cape from MillaMia, published as part of their winter knitting collection. This generously sized, wrist-to-wrist cape is crafted to be warm, comfortable, and elegant, making it an ideal cold-weather accessory. The standout feature of the design is its cable-detailed collar worked in purl garter stitch, which adds a sophisticated textural element to an otherwise classic silhouette. The pattern is rated at an improving skill level, making it well suited to knitters who have moved beyond the absolute basics and are ready to tackle simple cable techniques with confidence.

What Is Being Made

The Madicken Cape is a full women's cape designed to drape from wrist to wrist across the shoulders and back. It is a substantial, large-scale knitted garment intended to be worn over everyday clothing for warmth and style. The cape features a cable-embellished collar as its focal point, with the body pieces forming wide, sweeping front and back panels. The finished garment is available in four sizes to fit bust measurements ranging from 82–87 cm up to 112–117 cm (32–34 in to 44–46 in). Wrist-to-wrist measurements including edging range from 102 cm to 117 cm (40 to 46 in), and the length to shoulder including edging ranges from 76 cm to 84 cm (30 to 33 in).

Techniques Used

  • Worked flat (back and forth in rows): The main body pieces of the cape are knitted flat on straight or circular needles, working backwards and forwards in rows rather than in the round. Because the pieces are large, a circular needle is used purely to accommodate the high stitch count, not to knit in the round.
  • Worked in the round: Certain sections of the pattern incorporate circular knitting, making use of the 3.25mm circular needle included in the materials list.
  • Cables: The collar features a prominent cable detail worked using a cable needle. Two cable crossings are used: C8F (cable 8 front), where four stitches are held at the front before knitting, and C8B (cable 8 back), where four stitches are held at the back. These eight-stitch cable crossings create bold, rope-like twists that give the collar its distinctive character.
  • Purl garter stitch: The collar is worked in purl garter stitch, providing a textured, ridged background that beautifully offsets the raised cable panels.
  • Seamed construction (bottom-up): The cape is constructed from the bottom up, with separate front and back pieces that are subsequently seamed together. The pattern notes that it can be helpful to alternate between working the body pieces and the collar during construction, given the scale of the project.
  • Decreases and increases: Standard shaping techniques are used throughout, including k2tog (knit two together), skpo (slip one, knit one, pass slipped stitch over), and s2kpo (slip two stitches as if to knit two together, then pass slipped stitches over, decreasing two stitches at once).

Stitches Used

  • Knit stitch – the foundation of the cable sections and body fabric
  • Purl stitch – used extensively in the garter stitch collar background
  • Garter stitch – created in purl form for the collar texture
  • Cable 8 Front (C8F) – an eight-stitch front-cross cable creating a left-leaning twist
  • Cable 8 Back (C8B) – an eight-stitch back-cross cable creating a right-leaning twist
  • Slip stitch decreases – including skpo and s2kpo for clean, directional shaping
