What is Being Made

Madeira Waves is an asymmetrical scarf designed by Samira Hill of Eildon Hills Designs. This knitted shawl draws inspiration from traditional Shetland lace patterns, specifically the historic "Madeira Cascade" motif. The design combines classic lace work with a contemporary aesthetic, featuring a deep turquoise blue colorway that evokes Mediterranean connections. The scarf is constructed to grow from the smallest point at the cast-on edge to the largest point at the cast-off edge, creating a dramatic asymmetrical silhouette that showcases the interplay between delicate lace sections and solid stocking stitch backgrounds.

Techniques and Stitches Used

This intermediate-level knitting project incorporates multiple stitch techniques worked in distinct sections throughout the pattern. The construction includes the following stitch patterns:

• Garter stitch sections, which create a textured, reversible fabric
• Stocking stitch bands that provide a smooth, classic knit background
• Wavy bands that reference the traditional Shetland lace heritage
• Short lace knitting sections featuring openwork patterns characteristic of the Madeira Cascade design

Materials and Tools

This project is worked in 4-ply yarn weight using the following materials:

• Needles: 3.5mm knitting needles, with a 60–80cm long circular needle recommended to comfortably accommodate the increasing number of stitches as the shawl expands toward the cast-off edge
• Yarn: 100g of 4-ply or sock wool in a main solid colour (MC), such as Knitted Borders sock wool in shade "Jennifer" (75% Superwash Merino wool, 25% nylon) or equivalent
• Contrast yarn: 100g of 4-ply or sock wool in a contrasting shade, such as Burrow & Soar sock wool in shade "Azalea" (75% Superwash Merino wool, 25% nylon) or equivalent

The use of superwash-treated merino blended with nylon provides durability, elasticity, and easy-care properties suitable for a wearable lace accessory. The 4-ply weight allows for detailed stitch definition in both the lace and solid sections.
